HDX anti-glare matte finish?

When the HDX was originally announced Kirk said the original skyview-ish finish would be offered to open cockpit types who may not be able to handle the sunspot on the newer finish of HDX. Online I only see 7 and 10 choices, not a choice of finish.

Discussion around 6 minute mark here
Is the choice still a thing?

I certainly hope it will happen. I have two touch models will not move to HDX because all videos I view always show reflections. Appears in bubble canopies of covered cockpits. I have a bubble canopy. I do like the resolution of HDX.

I personally don't find it to be an issue at all, but then again not a bubble canopy. Having shot the HDX screen in a few videos, I can say (as a professional cinematographer) that the reflection appears much worse on camera. I attribute this partially to the small sensor of the GoPro (or similar action camera) which keeps almost everything in focus. The human eye , when focusing on the screen, renders the reflection as very out of focus. I even notice that shooting the screen with a full frame format sensor rather than a small sensor action cam shows a huge difference in perceived reflection. Just something to think about.
Also wondering if anyone has tried to use an anti glare screen protector like the one I use on my iPad Pro which seriously reduces reflections?

I was one of the HDX test pilots and found the screen to be a serious issue. I flew several hundred HDX test flights and can assure you the reflections "do NOT appear much worse on camera." They are bad - period! In person. Using Mark I eyeballs. I wrote many reports about this issue and was sent 3 different anti-glare stick-ons to evaluate as possible solutions. None provided satisfactory resolution IMHO, and none allowed screen conditions equal to the SV-Classic or Touch.

The HDX had a number of other screen issues or problems. One was - despite any NIT measurements claiming otherwise - much dimmer than the previous and difficult to see in direct sunlight. (I fly an RV-12 with a bubble canopy.) I provided many pictures illustrating the problem. Side by side, same sun angles etc.

The HDX also has a serious off-axis viewing problem. I noted this immediately on first fire-up, when standing alongside in my hangar to make the initial config set-up. I had difficulty reading the display. My co-pilot, who had hundreds of hours in the airplane, immediately complained about not being able to see the flight instruments (when they had been clear previously.) I found the only way I could play with the HDX, and adjust the various settings - e.g. customize the Engine displays, was to sit in the airplane. It is a puzzlement to me how an airplane could be used for flight training when the instructor has such a difficult time reading the panel from the right seat.

Yet another HDX screen problem involves font sizes. The HDX down-sized certain fonts by 2 points - enough to make them unreadable by my old eyes. I'm referring, for example, to the Course and Heading box callouts using the six-pack display. Dynon acknowledged this type size reduction, but did nothing about it. (I suggested making the font sizes adjustable.)

HDX had myriad other issues, but I am only addressing screen problems here.

In the end, although given the opportunity to continue with HDX, I reinstalled my SV-Touch panel, which I felt then, and feel now, is far superior. It is regrettable that Dynon discontinued that model of Skyview. My only recourse going forward will be to buy a second hand unit to support my flying.

Funny you guys are complaining. I never see glare or reflection as a problem in the RV10. Nor any of the others I have installed. I do find that photos can show it up far worse than real life though.

YMMV

Yeah I don't know I guess it's a matter of personal opinion here. The glare/reflection has not bothered me (and I live in SUNNY Southern California!). I guess I wouldn't wear a white shirt on a sunny day and fly towards the sun??? LOL. To me it's a non-issue but obviously YMMV...

Those HDX pics actually look like they have a piece of smooth glass over the surface. I've never seen that kind of glare my Touch or my buddies HDX and they both have the same surface. I couldn't get that kind of glare if I set up flood light behind me. That is a strange one.

I have a Skyview Classic which I have been flying behind for the past 7 years. Been considering upgrading to an HDX. I had an opportunity to fly in a buddy’s RV-10 with three HDX displays. I must say I was surprised by the amount of glare and reflection I experienced. So much so, that if I pursue the HDX I will definitely need to install an anti-glare screen protector similar to what I have on my iPad.
