Flying level in VMC, my single HDX screen went black, and re-booted.

Came back in about 1 minute, 5 seconds later re-booted again

came back, re-booted again in about 5 minutes.

Screen came back - and functioned normally until landing 15 minutes later.

The screen reported system event 3 in the msg. window - I uploaded 2 event logs to dynon today.

SN35433
SW version16.4.0.9609

This screen has about 5 hours since new

wifi adapter installed (but not very reliable - disconnects from IPAD frequently in flight)
usb stick installed (the one that comes with the screen)

Event 3 is a fairly generic error that mainly means a problem occurred that caused a reboot. Not greatly helpful information, except it is commonly caused by USB devices. You can wait and see what Dynon says when reviewing the logs, or try again without USB devices installed. Without a pressing need for immediate flight, I'd probably wait for Dynon. That doesn't preclude ground testing. But since you only reported the problem inflight, I wouldn't necessarily consider a successful ground test to be a 100% fix.

I have been flying behind Dynon screens for several years now - including IMC.

This event has shaken my confidence in Dynon for light IFR - this could have been fatal if I was in IMC at the time.

How common are these re-boots? Is it a matter of not using any USB devices or just a dice roll with the particular display serial number?

I have two HDX screens that I have flown for about 300 hours on the last two years. I have never seen an uncommanded in-flight reboot.

For the problem reported, can you save the log files? Do they show the system voltage?
Was the voltage stable and correct before and after the reboots?
Do you have the backup battery installed?
I would suggest gathering this basic information and sharing it with Dynon support.

Good thoughts Bob,

I do have the backup battery installed - functions correctly (screen stays on during cranking and for "power off countdown" after master goes off)

the dynon logs show the system voltage did not fluctuate during the events, the last data frames before the re-boots from the HDX showed system voltage 14.3 volts. If there was a sudden power loss, it might be hard to detect with the telemetry from the hdx alone.

one more clue - there were no messages from the Vertical power system after the re-boots (the VPX stayed powered, and showed no faults on the EFIS circuit).
