Heated Pitot Status Does Not Work - Shorted to Ground

After a number of years I decided to connect the heated Pitot Status line from the Heated Pitot/AOA controller to the EMS. I connected the status line to EMS D37 Pin9. The heated pitot works, but the status line (white wire) from the controller does not work. I used a volt meter and have zero volts to ground with the heated Pitot On or Off.

I am assuming that the status line from the controller should be 5 volts when the Heated Pitot is powered on. But it is zero. I disconnected the controller and when I used an ohm meter and check the status line to ground, it is shorted. If I check the ohms from the case of the controller to the status wire, I get zero ohms which means that it is shorted to the case/ground.

Question. Since I am assuming that there is a problem with the status line, my question is if the controller is defected?

Since the controller is out of warranty, wondering if Dynon sells just the controller or if they would repair my controller?

Thank you...

What you should be checking on Pin 9 is not voltage, but continuity to a common ground with the EMS-220. See page 7-72 of Rev. AG of the Skyview Installation manual. When a contact pin goes to ground, it's closed - when it's open, it's not connected to anything. You also need to set up pin 9 per the instructions on that same page, to read voltage correctly for "Open" or "Closed". Also see page 15-1, that talks specifically about the settings for the PHEAT input.

Thank you, Marc. This was very helpful. My Pitot Heat indicator/contact is now working.
I'm in the same situation...what was the fix? Simply configuring the contact pin parameters and definition? Appreciate a bit further insight. Thanks!
Dave

Update: finally got around to resolving a somewhat similar issue with my indicator. Using the sensor debug page I discovered that I had wired the wire from the controller to a different contact than what I had defined and configured...go figure. And FYI the light will stay steady state as the control cycles power to heat the pitot tube.

When there is no power (+12V) applied to the Pitot/Controller, the status line reads zero ohms to ground. I thought that this was a problem, but it was not. All I had to do was set EMS D37 Pin 9 to Contact per 7-72 of the installation guide. Then configure the Contact Sensor setup per 7-83 of the installation guide. If it is wired correctly, this will work. It did for me.

Good luck...

When the sensor is set up correctly, does it stay on whenever the switch is on, or do you see it go on and off as the unit adjusts for temperature?

When set up correctly, I noticed that it works correctly. When the switch is on, it indicates that pitot heat is on and when the switch is off, it indicates that pitot heat is off. Never checked to see if as the actual pitot temperature changes if the indicators turns off and on.

Dynon should be able to answer this question.

Ours showed on when the switch was first turned on, then went off on the display, but I was airborne at the time, so I have no idea if it was actually working. It eventually came back. At this point I’m trying to figure out where to start troubleshooting.

On mine the indicator is on solid when the heated pitot is active - the indicator does not cycle with the power application on the heater. I can see the power swings on my volt/amps from the electrical system, but the indicator stays on solid.

Thanks. I’ll confirm configuration, but is sounds more like I’m looking for loose wires or an issue with the control unit.
