Hiccup this afternoon

Flying along I moved the curser over an airport and pressed info. The info screen came up all black. At this point the Remainder of the screen was frozen. About a minute or two later it came back to life. A short time later the sectional and low charts disappeared. I had loaded the new charts just prior to this flight so I retrieved the previous database and all was good for the remainder of the flight. Once in the hangar I reinstalled the offending USB stick and it functioned normally. I believe the Trutrak Gemini continued to track the course although it could have just been good trim! I didn't do anything to verify.
Any clues! I will download the log files before further flight. I have plenty of back up but I don't have 10" post it notes to cover a frozen display.

So first, know that if you get into a state where the system isn't responding properly, you can reset the display by pressing buttons 1, 2, and 5 simultaneously.

Next, what version of software is your SkyView system running? We had a service bulletin for a version of 14.0 that could cause symptoms similar to what you're describing.

A diagnostic log might be instructive if it's not a known software bug.

I will check and upgrade to 14.1 I upgraded to 14 possibly 30+ hours ago and have not had any issues until the last 2 flights. I did download the debug file but I may try 14.1 first.

I have updated my SW to 4.2.1 and downloaded the latest SA maps and FAA data. Flying this evening it took about 10 minutes for the sectional chart to go away. After a 45 minute flight I downloaded the log files. The sectionals did not come back in flight or when I powered it up to download the log files. It did come back once I was done. Something is very intermittent.

So a few things:

When we typically see diagnostic logs with odd chart-related behaviors, we often see a bunch of USB communication errors. We'd still be happy to take a look at yours to see if that's the case here (see dynon.aero/reportlog, make sure to provide a link to this thread in the message area).

A few things that can cause USB issues:
1) Outright issues with the stick. Trying a different stick entirely would be a quick thing to try here.
2) Issues with the connection. The USB ports on the back of the display are sometimes a bit better able to handle the continuous data transfer without errors than the one that's broken out on the 37 pin harness. So, if you're using the harness-provided USB port, try one of the ones on the back of the display (it's OK to use an extension.)

I have uploaded the diagnostic file. See (Case 232315) Skyview failure SN 2114. The USB port that I am using has been working for several years with no issues, that said I can try the rear mounted USB. The failure occurred with 2 different USB sticks. During the first failure the display locked up entirely. Please take a look at the file and I will try a different USB port and report the results. I will also record the time more accurately to help locate the failure point.
I appreciate the help.

I plan on running two dynon SV screens with two AHRS and no other attitude indicator.

How often does these hiccups occur?

Hiccups are not recommended for IFR operations... just say'in..

Should I consider running the second Dynon screen independently and not connected to the network?

Four years now flying IFR running dual 10" SkyView displays. "Hiccups" are rare. I had one screen start to go bad but Dynon replaced it. Never had both screens with a problem.

Not having both screens and both ADHARS connected to the network injects multiple failure modes that do not otherwise exist, on top of practical issues like ARINC, AP and XPDR connections. Don't do it.

Update,
I removed the USB connection to the 37 pin connector and plugged my front panel USB jack into one of the rear panel connectors. Currently I have flown for a couple of hours and my map issue seems to be resolved.

Just to follow-up. I discovered a poor crimp on the ground wires ( ground/shield) on the USB dongle to 37 pin D wiring. All seems to be OK now using the original USB port.

I too had many intermittent issues with the USB off of the harness. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Long story short, at the advice of Dynon, I connected directly into the back USB ports and have had no issues since. I attached short USB extensions and run through a hole under the panel. I can now upload and switch drives w/o an issue. I have the wifi dongle on the second rear port extension, and it works great with FlyQ on iPad.

I had received the same advise and indeed it was a solution. I didn't understand why it worked well for years and then failed. I posted my findings because it appears that a poor crimp where 2 wires were in the same pin failed and it may be the root cause of your failure as it was with mine. The factory crimp was not the 4 quadrant crimp that I am used to. The crimp distorted the pin enough that it was difficult to get an extraction tool over it.
I don't like to just cover an unknown problem, there is a root cause somewhere that should be found.
