HITS

Can someone explain how the HITS works? I have performed several approaches and the vertical navigation in the box does not seem to match the ILS course portrayed on the HSI. What drives the boxes en-route and approach modes? Are the boxes somehow coupled to the HSI? If so whatever navigation device is selected to drive the HSI will also drive the HITS? Dynon please educate me here so I can fully understand how all this works before I stick my head in the clouds. :-[

Manual for V15 is on the website under product documentation. Page 4-22.

I think you mean the description of HITS in the pilot manual, not how to setup and use the features.
To be clear, I am asking for the Installation manual that actually explains the setup screens and how to set the various features, including how does HITS work, not that I can use it with or without Autopilot..
Appreciate the guidance however.

I too would be interested in learning more. The HITS doesn't match LPV approach paths exactly. (GNS-430W via ARINC)

P.S. I noted they also didnt show at all in a hold.

All the same here. No HITS in holds, ILS/LPV approaches, etc. Autopilot always driven exactly 0.02nm to the left of centerline - never happened before HITS.

Turned off HITS. More trouble than it's worth for IFR.

I have flown a competitors HITS and the box lines were very thin but bright, good contrast to other imagery, yet didn't block anything. I prefer that to the thick lines and opaque color of the Dynon HITS box. Just a preference, not complaining just suggesting. I am glad it is now available.
Also, on the only practice approach I have done with V15, I noticed I was lined up left of center which was odd as I was always centered before, didn't think about it until reading the last post.

Dynon can you please address some of these issues with HITS. I look every day for the manual updates to classic as well. There are several valid questions here about HITS. I have just turned it off for IFR because its un-useable as is or I just have it set up wrong.

Yes I did an approach with Hits and found that I was about .02nm left of the centerline as well.

I installed v15.0.3 and the HITS also shows me .02 miles left of what my G430W indicates. I found it odd but didn't think anything about it until now.

:-?

We're looking into the reports of the HITs not lining up with the centerline.

HITS will basically draw anything that is drawn on the map, except note that the source for HITS is determined by the navigation source on the HSI. If the remote navigator is providing a hold that is drawn on the map (assuming it is the selected flight plan on the map), then HITS should draw it if that is the navigation source on the HSI. What gets drawn is determined by what that remote source outputs, though. Also, segments may not show up as expected during the entry depending on the navigator and the pilot's choice of entry into the hold.

HITS currently only provides the vertical profile when VNAV is active on SkyView's internal flight plan.

So what you are telling me Dynon is that HITS will not follow the vertical component of my Garmin 430W navigator. If that is true then HITS is worthless for IFR work as it will not follow the vertical component of the certified WAAS navigator and the boxes being displayed will be misleading and confusing. Am I correct in this?

Right now, the only vertical guidance that HITS will show is the (VFR-oriented) VNAV planning that SkyView can generate. All other altitude guidance is at the altitude bug, even when an external flight plan is being shown. So HITS in its current form is best used for enroute flight and during SkyView-generated VNAV. We'll update the documentation to better-reflect the capabilities here: thanks for asking these clarifying questions.

Oooooh, THIS should move up to be high on your "to do" list...have the HITS take info from the navigator (GNS, GTN, what have you) and properly show the glideslope and localizer (or equivalent for a GPS-only approach).

This seems to be a big miss here...I'm not generally concerned about flying straight and level for hundreds of miles :) It's the approach and departure procedures that benefit *the most* from on-screen guidance cues.

Steve you're right on here. HITS is totally worthless for cruise flight. Its decent, hold and approach where it would be most useful. I really would not want to see it in cruise and would turn it off for that flight regimen. I still cant believe that it is VFR use only. It's almost like giving a kid a piece of candy but they can only eat it on a cloudless day. Bummer. :-/

Don't get me wrong - I'm still in awe at the technology Dynon has brought to the experimental community. When you've learned on ADF and VOR this glass stuff is just amazing and the autopilot will take me right to the numbers every time. What I don't get is why Dynon seems to prematurely bring stuff to market that is half baked. Perhaps its driven by the marketing department being ahead of the technology development folks - who knows. It just seems that the advertising hype over sells the technology and then the development folks play catch up even after the product is offered for sale or use. It sure would be nice if the documentation was available when the products or enhancements were available and that the limitations of such were clearly disclosed. I have sure learned not to go stick my head in the clouds right after doing an update. This hits thing is a perfect example of how someone gets into an accident situation if they do not understand the limitations of the equipment. We should have been clearly informed that it only worked properly utilizing the Skyview flight plan and not to rely on hits when using other navigators. Its been almost 30 days since the software was released and still no manual update!!!! I also noticed today that version 15.0.3 has been available since 11/21 and I was unaware of it as there was no announcement to my knowledge. Dynon I understand the need for a company to stay competitive in their market by bringing new products ans services to the marketplace, but I think its more important to bring a more complete product for the end user thereby eliminating the majority of the end stage development by the users.
