Holding patterns

Hi Dynon, i just installed a Garmin 400W and have been playing with it lately. One thing I am confused about is that I thought holds would be depicted in SV. However, i am not seeing that for my home airport.

Here is the approach plate for GPS Z RWY 30 at KHAF. The missed approach procedure has you holding at SEEMS. The 400W depicts everything the same as on the approach plate. However, SV only shows a white line up to SEEMS. The actual holding pattern is not depicted as it is on the 400W or plate.

I flew the actual missed procedure and nothing ever showed up on SV, though it was all there on the 400W.

I remember seeing this screen picture showing a holding pattern for KASE. However, not sure which plate or procedure this is for. I could not find this holding pattern on any current plates or procedures.

I am still an IFR student, so i am still learning how all this stuff works. ;)

Two questions:

Do you have an ARINC adapter in the plane? The more detailed data on the map requires this.

What SW version is your 400W?

I just flew this weekend and saw a hold on SkyView from my GTN650, so they do work. The configuration of the GPS (both in setup and the configuration of the approach) does matter, so we should look into that some.

Not all holds are shown on plates. Notice in KASE's procedures, it says for the missed to go to LINDZ and hold. The GPS data knows that but the published plate omits it in the graphics.

Hi, yes 400W connected via Dynon ARINC module. it is configured according to the Skyview installation manual, as far as i know.

I think the 400W is version 5.xx or so, i believe. i can confirm this next time at plane. i bought the unit new in March 2014 and delivered direct from Garmin.

I will get a screenshot as well. I thought i already had it.

We underprivileged aviators down under do not get holds at all, UNLESS the procedure have what is known as a a mandatory hold.

Garmin will only display holds that are a mandatory part of the approach data.

It may be possible that your approach has one and is one of the few in the USA that are like this.

A few folk down here have been trying to get Airservices Australia, Jepp and Garmin all on the same page (plate) for years and have failed so far. That is the only reason I learned about this.

See how you go at other airports.

I flew one recently with the latest software, and garmin 430w with version 5 firmware. Same as the original poster, the hold was shown on the garmin but not on skyview. Just the course line to the fix at the hold point.

Thanks for the update Harry. Hopefully, it's a simple fix for us. Having the visuals on the bigger SV screen sure would be nice.

I have a few more Garmin related questions. I figure posting in this single thread is easier than new posts.

1. Is there a way for garmin MSG alerts to be displayed on the SV screen as well? I think that would be a great enhancement. Even just an aural alert would be useful to be reminded about a turn or updated DTK (desired track etc.)

2. I can test it out some time, but i wonder if Dynon may already have an answer. Given i have a 400W and an SL-30, can SV automatically switch the HSISRC from the 400W to the SL-30's nav radio when needed? I realize that with a 430W, the GPS and NAV src are all in the garmin box and the garmin box itself can do all the switching probably.

In my case the switch would have to be done by SV from the GPS ARINC429 src to the SL-30's nav serial src.

Thanks for the update!

1. I'm not sure whether or not messages are even transmitted over ARINC, but regardless, they aren't annunciated by SkyView.

2. SkyView does not have the ability to switch the HSI source in this fashion. As you said, when the device has both the NAV and GPS inside, like the 430W and the GTN products do, SkyView does have the ability to switch between the NAV and GPS side of those devices on their command.

Unless I am dreaming and wrong, with the GTN if you hit the CDI button from GPS to LOC the output to the HSI goes from GPS to LOC with just that one touch.

David,
You are correct, on the GTN if you press CDI it switches between the VLOC and GPS. On the GNS, you hit the CDI hard key. This gets automated in the approach for you as well. But this is only true for GTN and GNS units that have VLOC receivers built in.

The poster was asking if they could switch from a 400W (no VLOC) to their SL-30 (VLOC only) via the 400W saying to switch from GPS to VLOC. We can't do it between two external sources. Not even sure the 400W tells you to do so since it knows it doesn't have a VLOC.
