HS34 Causing NavCom issues with Garmin SL30

Anybody ever heard of the HS34 causing problems with the Garmin SL30, not allowing frequency changes etc?

Just bought a plane that had the HS34 taken out because of this and was wondering if anybody has seen this before.

Looks like after more research and noticing a "COM FAILURE" error on the SL30, I think the problem is a bad serial connection between the SL30 and the HS34.
