HS34 pinout clarification

First, do I need to update the firmware on the HS34? Is it already loaded with 4.0?
When I tried to connect my PC to the HS34, it could not connect.
I would like to verify the way I have wired the serial connection to the DB9. The pins to use for the DB9 are not indicated on the pinout instructions so I tried to follow the ones on the D-10A.
I connected the HS34, Pin 1 Serial 1 RX, to the DB9, Pin 3, HS34, Pin 14 Serial 1 TX, to the DB9, Pin 2, Aircraft ground to the DB9, pin 5.
The wiring harness for the D-10A was built by SteinAir and works fine, (assuming that I caused the firmware update to not recognize the remote compass), I built the wiring harness for the HS34 and the PC can not connect. I am concerned that I may have miswired the serial 1.
I do not have my radios yet, so the connector lower 25 is not connected to anything. It appears that it will only have 8 wires on it connected to my GNS430W when I get it.

Thanks for helping bail me out of this,

I'm sure Dynon will address the pin matters in your question, but there is one thing you need to keep in mind that I ran into with my D-100/HS-34 install. When you update the firmware, you have to do it twice, once into a DB-9 connected to the HS-34 and then again in a DB-9 connected to the EFIS. You would intuitively think that one install would be adequate and that it would go through all the interconnects to whatever instruments that used it. Not so. I had to install a dedicated DB-9 for the HS-34 and another for the EFIS. No big deal really but that is not explained in the installation manual.

BTW, I am absolutely ELATED with the performance of this equipment. I pulled out the entire six pack and vacuum system from my 850 hour RV-8A and replaced it with the D-100/HS-34 combo. The capability of these instruments playing together is nothing less than stunning.

You are correct, Bill. It is in the attempt to update the HS34 through its DB9 connector that I ran into this problem. You don't happen to remember which pins you used, do you? It appears that you were sucessful... ;)

First, all HS34's are preloaded with 4.0 at the factory. There is no need to update them until the next software release. No harm in updating them either. Bill is correct that when you do an update, you need to hook the PC to each Dynon product individually. While technically possible to update all products over the interconnect, this is a lot of software to write and we just haven't had the time for it yet.

The wiring diagram for the serial port is on page 6-12 of the EFIS install manual. We apologize if you didn't find this or didn't get an updated EFIS manual with your HS34.

You can grab the manual if you need: http://dynonavionics.com/downloads/Install_Guides/EFIS-D100 Installation Guide.pdf

It sounds like you have pins 2/3 reversed.

HS34 Pin 14 goes to Serial pin 2
HS34 Pin 1 goes to Serial 3
Ground goes to pin 5

You are correct that nothing is hooked to the lower D25 until you hook to your radio, and if you are hooking to a 430/530, only 8 wires are used.

None of this has anything to do with your compass issue, which we will discuss in the other thread.

Thanks, I was pretty sure that I had the pins reversed.
By the way, this info is not listed in the D-10A install guide. I realize that you guys are working so hard getting out new stuff for us that you are having a difficult time keeping the paperwork up to date... :)

I will reverse the pins and check your other answers. I have also downloaded the install guide for the D100.

Thanks,

Actually, it's on page 6-12 of the D10A install guide as well. But only in install guides that shipped with / after the 4.0 software release. You may just have an older D10A install guide since your EFIS was shipped before the HS34 was released. You should have received an updated one with your HS34. Sorry if you did not.

Yep! As suspected...I had the pins reversed on the DB9 pins 2 & 3.

Thanks for the help!
