When Map Panning Mode Pointer is moved to a place and Direct To is selected, the magenta line extends to the place that I selected. The Info Page appears showing the place that I selected. I select Navigate and DTK+Dist+ETE appear showing numbers that correspond to the place that I selected. It also indicates that it is active. When I select HSI+ALT the window will not turn green indicateing that the autopilot will not engage in that mode. The manual reads (7-36) that a temporary Map Pointer waypoint is created that allows one to navigate Direct-To that you are pointing at. I guess my question is, can one navigate to that waypoint using the autopilot?

Probably a dumb question, but are you adding your temporary waypoint to your active flightplan? ISTR, for HSI as a Nav source, you must have a flight plan active.

Simply placing a map pointer and using Direct To doesn't add it to your flight plan for HSI guidance. You need to do this manually, using the MENU>ADD TO FPL option. (Pilots user guide, rev N, p 7-33), and then engage HSI as your lateral Nav mode.

From your description, I am guessing you don't have the SKYVIEW map shown on your HSI. The autopilot flies the HSI, so the HSI must be on the correct source.

Go to the PFD menu, then press HSI SRC until it says "SKYVIEW" next to the HSI.

As long as the HSI is showing a deviation needle, you should be able to press HSI+ALT and have it engage.
