I installed a Val Nav 2000

I installed a Val Nav 2000 and got it working. It picks up the VORs, I can hear the signal from the VOR. I have it connected to the skyview serial port 4 and I see valid data flowing between the skyview and the Val. In the serial setup, I can not only see that data is flowing, but can read what the Val is tuned to and even the standby frequencies. I have the serial port 4 set to NAV1 in the skyview setup. When I go to NAV1 on the display I get no frequencies or needle indication. I was flying around and playing with it and I noticed that when I swap frequencies on the NAV the skyview displays the frequency for a few seconds. If I tune to an ILS it showed on the CDI deflection and the glide slop for a few seconds then went blank again. I'm doing something wrong but can't figure out what. Thanks in advance for any ideas?

Forgot to mention I That I have the Skyview serial 4 set to Garmin SL-30, which the Val is supposed to emulate.

Richard,
You need to contact Val. Depending on what firmware you have, you need to set up the Val different ways. If it's set up wrong, it will do what you are experiencing.

I was starting to realize it was a setting in the Val. The install manual is a little difficult to figure out. Thanks so much for getting back to me. I'll keep you posted.

Ryan,  I spoke to Val last night after I tried again to get it working. I saw that settings they were saying to use in the install manual were not even there? So I called and they told me it needs a firmware update to work with the dynon. I have to send it back in and they will update it and get it right back to me. Not a big deal, just I was frustrated trying to get my new radio working. Now I'm send it back! What little I did see of it working did look cool though. I'll keep you posted, should have it back in early next week.

Ryan, I meant to say also, you can tell if you have the later firmware easily. Get into the settings mode by turning on and holding the two push buttons in. See the manual. The first setting is called Rs I. Mine had three settings in there. The fourth called NON, I did not have. NON is what you need to use with the Dynon. You could power it up and look in there to make sure you have it. If not get on the phone.

Thanks Richard. Mine is still on backorder, so hopefully it will come with the latest software.

Ryan and Richard,

I also installed the nav 2000 to the skyview and WITH the new firmware all works as advertised.
I had identical results to yours prior to update.
Hang in there it will be fixed once they upgrade unit.

I got to fly tonight with the updated Val Nav 2000, and the updated Skyview version 10 software, finally after days of bad weather here in the North East. The nav works perfectly with the Skyview. I'm able to tune VORs, ILS, and see the glideslope. Works very well. One thing I noticed that I didn't think it would do is turn a CRS on the skyview and it sets the OBS. So you can turn it on the Val or the Dynon. I can send a frequency to the Nav standby by pressing tune on the skyview. One thing that I didn't get working was to display the frequencies on the top bar of the skyview screen. The new installation manual for the skyview states "if you wish to display the nav 2000 frequency and status on the top bar, go to Setup Menu > system setup > Displayed Com > and set to > Val Avionics Nav 2000. My system displays Primary Com and when I set it to Val Nav 2000 I get the dreaded red X. No big deal really, You see the frequency next to the HSI when set to the Val.

That's by design - we only display COM radio status in that location, and since the Val Nav 2000 is just the NAV radio, that's why you get the red X when you set it as your primary COM.

In the Install manual version 10, on page 4-18 it does state: [ch61623]

"If you wish the NAV 2000 frequency and status to be displayed on the top bar: SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > DISPLAYED COM > VAL AVIONICS NAV 2000 (PORT x) and SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > DISPLAY COM IN TOP BAR: YES"

So I got confused.

Apologies for the misleading setup info for the NAV 2000 in Rev Q of the SkyView System Installation Guide. As a NAV radio, the NAV 2000 shouldn't appear as an option in DISPLAYED COM, and we'll try to get that fixed. Here are the revised installation instructions in the interrim:

On SkyView
* SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > SERIAL PORT SETUP > SERIAL PORT x SETUP > SERIAL IN
DEVICE > VAL AVIONICS NAV 2000. This will automatically set the SERIAL IN/OUT BAUD
RATE and SERIAL OUT DEVICE.
* Set SERIAL IN FUNCTION TO NAV 1, 2, 3, or 4. If the NAV 2000 is the only NAV device, select
NAV 1.
* Set NAVIGATION SOURCE DISPLAY NAME: (user selectable, 7 characters – suggest
NAV2000). The name entered here is displayed as one of the options on the HSI SRC button.
* SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > DISPLAYED COM: NONE (If a SkyView compatible COM radio such as the SV-COM-C25 is installed, refer to those instructions for this setting). Do not select VAL NAV 2000 (PORT x).
and
* SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > DISPLAY COM IN TOP BAR: NO (If a SkyView compatible COM radio such as the SV-COM-C25 is installed, refer to those instructions for this setting).

No problem at all I was just confused a little. I always think It's me doing something wrong. like I said you can see the frequency at the HSI source so it's all good. I love version 10 and all the goodies. I also noticed the log files are fixed. no more multiple files. The banana is great, and the purple vertical speed needed to the airport is also very cool. Thanks for the quick response.

I just installed the Val Nav 2000 and made a serial connection to my Skyview. Initially, the VOR worked fine, but now it is doing the same thing you described. However, my ILS-glideslope work fine. Sent to Val and they say it bench tested fine. Have you found a solution. Help.
