ICAO equipment codes?

Just learning about new flight plan requirements for both ICAO and domestic RNAV routes...what a mass of confusion this is, it'll take me some time to sort it out, I think...but in the meantime:

Looks like there are several different equipment codes for ICAO flight plans, including (from DUATS, what I can glean) codes for xmitting ACID, press alt, squitter, something called ENH Surv...

What code is correct for the Dynon XPDR?

And while we're at it...how does this change affect us here in the U.S. for strictly domestic flight?

WHat is the correct flight plan entry for my RV-8 equiped with Skyivew, Skyview GPS, Skyview Mode S TPX and Garmin SL30 Nav/Com?

RV8/I? (RNAV)
RV8/A?(DME mode C)

The Dynon GPS is not a certified navigation device. You should not use any of the RNAV codes. VOR/DME with Mode C is close but the Dynon transponder is also Mode S. There are codes dealing with this in the chart. I am not sure if it uses extended squitter but hopefully Support will be along to shed some light on the actual transponder functions to be noted.

As mentioned before, the SkyView GPS is not certified, thus you have no RNAV, LPV, or GNSS capabilities. Basically, you don't have a GPS in the plane.

The Transponder is a Mode S with full ES and ADS-B out capabilities. However, without a certified GPS on board, you are not ADS-B out compliant and should not file that way. So you're a mode-S with pressure altitude but not extended squitter/ADS-B. A mode S is a superset of Mode C so you can always file with Mode C.

We're not experts at if the non-certified GPS is likely legal to be used as a DME for IFR, nor are we experts at ICAO codes overall, so you'll have to do some of your own research there.

But I do have a certified GPS...a GNS430W. So what does that make me? Currently, it's /G...

If you have a 430W, then that is your primary navigation source and you can file /G. For transponders, the Dynon transponder does not currently support certified ADS-B out. Once 5.0 releases, we will, but you will need to have your 430W software upgraded to use this. Once you have the 430W hooked to the transponder than you can file as Mode S with pressure altitude and extended squitter (ADS-B) out. You'd move from a P transponder to an E transponder with that connection.

For what it's worth, you might consult www.fltplan.com about the icao standards. They have a good glossary to help get your data settled, great light plan support, and it's free. Good supplement to ForeFlight IMHO. Jack L
