Hello all...My name is Paul Besing and I have a 1996 Glasair SIIRG. I'll be gutting the dated panel and putting in a Skyview system. Looking for any input and things to look out for from those who have been there and done that. Also looking for ways to save money on cables, sensors, etc.

Looking forward to the expertise,

Paul Besing

Hi Paul. Are you still in Tucson? If so I'd be happy to get together and see if I can help answer some of your questions. I've just finished wiring my RV7A kit and it is still "open" which may help you visualize your project.

Hi Paul:  I put a 2 screen Skyview system into my GIII 2 years ago.  You are welcome to call me at 250-742-3458 to discuss.

Hi Paul,
I liked the Approach Fast Stack wiring system for my Skyview system. Cables are premade with the functions you want and the length you want. Made wiring the Skyview system easy.

Use the Approach Fast Stack or Dynon has a system from their Advanced division that will make you wiring/installation very easy and professional looking and if you ever change or add something you will not have to butcher up a custom made harness. The one I used came with a well done professional schematic with all port settings for the configuration software of each device. It was plug and play everything worked when powered up. Good Luck with your project. G.W. :)

I did a lot of updating/changing equipment the first couple of years I after I bought my Glasair. I updated the panel to Skyview in 2010 and a couple years later added VP-X. I wasn't happy with the radio/intercom so I updated that a couple of years ago.

With each change it is next to impossible to work behind the panel unless you are skinny and have both arms on one side of your body. So I made the panel removable. If I need to do any work behind the panel it takes about 30 minutes to remove it. With the panel out I can access the back of the firewall and work on the panel on the bench.

I am using the Glasair 5 insert panel in my Tango 2, and agree strongly with Murray. Make the entire panel removable. I performed two other modifications. I widened the center stack insert to accommodate an AvMap, then eventually, a 7" Skyview. I also added a shelf extension along the bottom of the panel which supports relays, power/ground strips, remote boxes, etc. The shelf comes out with the panel, and as Murray stated, it is much easier working on the bench.

Great idea..I was trying to figure out where to put a 7" and looks like the center insert wont fit. Any pics of your mods?

Dynon was kind enough to cut down the bezel on the 7 inch screen so that it fit into the center stack on my canted panel.

Thanks Dave, that helps alot. I may decide to just display engine on the 10" and forgo the second display all together and use a D6 as my backup instruments and backup AHRS.
