After several discussions with Dynon Tech Support it was determined that the problem is with the USB to Serial driver but no solution for resolving the problem. In addition to the driver that I downloaded from Dynon's site I also tried a driver downloaded directly from the Prolific web site. My laptop is running Windows Vista, 32 bit. Any suggestions?

In a discussion with a local computer tech I learned that the driver to each USB to Serial device is unique to that device. So I decided to try another device, a Trendnet TU-S9, and its driver. The device installed properly and is now working. I haven't tried connecting the laptop to the D180 yet because the access is all buttoned up. It will have to wait until I open it up again.

I accessed the connection to the D180, hooked up and was able to talk to the D180. The problem was all in the USB to Serial device that came with my Dynon package. Apparently the driver on the Dynon web site is not the one for the device I received. Dynon tech support led me to the solution. Happily the problem is solved even though I had to spend another $25.
