Legacy Nav/Com Compatibility

Hi. I'm in the planning stages of the avionics for my RV-6 project. It will be a dual screen Skyview installation, and I'm planning on equipping it for IFR (Canadian regs).

The tentative plan - constrained largely by cost - is for GNS-400W GPS, GMA-240 audio panel, Dynon SV-COM-25C and a yet-to-be-specified Nav/Com/GS radio. This will equip me with dual comm, and independent dual nav (GPS + VOR/ILS) capability, as required by our Canadian Regulatory Overlords.

My problem is that Nav/Com/ILS's are *stupidly* expensive for what you get. Paying around $4000 for an SL-30 or GNC-255 is silly. I can find used, tagged Narco Mk12D's or King KX-165's for under $2000. Are these legacy radios compatible with Skyview? Will the Nav/ILS data output for display on the Skyview HSI?

I know...it's a cheap solution, but everyone has a budget.

Thanks,

Rob

Those radios aren't compatible, unfortunately. The two ways to get NAV radio data into SkyView are via SL30 format, or via ARINC (430W / GTN / similar Garmin kit)

Why would you go with a 400W? Adding NAV/COM to that "only" costs about $2,500, and is the most affordable way to go to end up with a modern, digital VLOC radio. Doesn't take any panel space either.

The reason for considering a 400W plus a separate Nav/Com is that the Canadian regs require dual independent Nav capability for IFR.

Considering your suggestion of a GNS-430, I might consider an IFR approach GPS as my back-up Nav. To wit, new question...

Is Skyview compatible with the Garmin GNC-300(XL) GPS? Can I use it to drive the HSI?

Thanks in advance,

Re your questions - yes to both  :)

As to the 430W & 530W & GTN series units,  get a second opinion as they are Sole Means Navigation approved - well they are here & I really expect the same in other parts of the world.

Thanks All,

I'm getting closer to the Expensive Decision. To clarify, my only reservation about a GNS-430 is that the IFR regulations in Canada require two independent nav systems, and the GPS and VOR/LOC functions of a GNS-430/530 are NOT considered independent in Canada. The Authority considers the display to be a common mode of failure. To wit, I need two separate means of navigation.

Returning to the Expensive Decision, I'm considering a GNS-480 and a GNC-300. That would provide dual Comm, VOR/LOC and dual IFR GPS. It's also just affordable enough.

My question: Does Skyview allow for dual GPS inputs to the HSI?

Thanks again,

They sure make it expensive for you there

I'm fairly sure you can't have 2 Gps's displayed at the same time but Dynon may chip in here, however you can select individual sources of Gps & have a Nav etc displayed on the same HSI.

Displayed on the HSI you are limited to 3 at the same time. Connected to the SV you are limited to the number of serial connections and the number of ARINC modules in the network, so lets say 5 serial and 4+ ARINC???

You could have 3 navigation sources displayed at the same time on the HSI.  Bearing source 1 (BRG 1) (Yellow arrow), Bearing Source 2 (BRG 2) (Orange Arrow) and the HSI Navigation source (magenta for GPS or Green for Nav radio).

Oh and you could use the SV GPS, a Garmin 430 GPS via ARINC, a Garmin 496 via serial, plus the different NAV radios. You really could load up a lot of different options.
Check out the HSI section of the users manual.
