I'm installing the 2020 in my RV6. I have a Garmin GNS430 installed also. I realize I've got a certified GPS source in the Garmin, but wanted the second source. I also know I can use either as the POS 1. What does dynon recommend using as the primary and second source. If I connect the serial out from the Garmin 430 to the dynon transponder as the certified source and the Garmin goes down, or I shut it off, will skyview send the GPS 2020 to the transponder as the possition source?

You should use the 2020 as your primary. The 2020 is 4Hz and will give much smoother SynVis performance.

The system will not switch ADS-B position sources on a failure. Having two compliant sources is pretty rare and per the TSO you aren't allowed to switch without notifying the pilot so we didn't implement that. You'll have to go to the transponder menu and change manually if you're ever in that situation.

Dynon support,

Thanks so much. I was wondering how that worked. What happened was I was looking for a decent price on a 430, when you announced the 2020 was available. As soon as I ordered the GPS 2020, a 430 came up for sale and I scooped it up. So now I have two sources.

So I can have the 430 connected to the transponder but just select the GPS2020 in the transponder setup?

Pretty much, yes. I have a 430W in my 9A and had it connected to the transponder for the certified GPS location, and then last night I installed the GPS 2020 and simply changed the position source in the transponder menu and it works fine.

When you set the SV-GPS-2020 to POS 1, that will be the GPS position source that SkyView uses for its "internal" uses - the position source for synthetic vision, terrain calculations, time, map position, etc.

Because you have a 430 wired to the transponder, AND you have an SV-GPS-2020 in your SkyView system, you can select either of those as the position source for the transponder:

SETUP MENU > TRANSPONDER SETUP > GPS POSITION SOURCE

But, as my colleague explained, if the one you have currently selected fails, it will not "fail over" from the one you have currently selected to another one - you will have to manually reconfigure GPS POSITION SOURCE from one unit to the other.
