NAV HSI Gone...???

I rarely use the nav functions on my airplane but the other day when ATC asked me to tell them which radial I was on from a VOR, I switched the HSI source to NAV via changing the CDI selection on the GTN 650. The CDI indicator changed to green like it always has but the indicator is now only a CDI indication instead of a HSI. When I switch back to GPS source on the the GTN 650 the indicator turns magenta and goes back to HSI indication.

Did I change a setting? or is there something in the firmware that changed this?

I have the same setup (GTN-650 with SkyView 12.2) and do not have this problem. Settings are per pages 12.8 and 12.9 of the installation manual.
Don't know if it makes any difference but I have do not have the automatic switching between GPS and Nav(ILS) enabled (page 12.9 of installation manual)

I think we need more information on what you mean by it was only a "CDI". An HSI is a CDI inside a directional gyro, and SkyView has no way to just be a CDI without the DG indication. What exactly was missing when on the VOR or what could you not adjust? Was it that you couldn't adjust course? Are you sure you were tuned to a VOR not an ILS?

As another hint, if you go into NRST and VOR on SkyView, it will show you the radial to all the VOR's near you.

this a CDI.

I would call

this a HSI.

When I select the manual source change over as suggesed below. the CDI type indication changes to what I call a HSI indication. 

The only indication that I get when in auto change over is which radial I am on and not how far off course that i am of a particular radial.   Today I tried changing back to the manual source and it works like it used to.

I like the auto changeover feature but I want the little bar in the middle like the above HSI picture.

It's still an HSI when it AUTO switches. The trick is, it synchronizes the CRS of the current VOR at the switch point, so everything is centered and it looks like a "CDI" Because there are no errors. Turn and fly off the radial and it will act like you expect.

Also, this is technically exactly what you wanted- the CRS at the time of switching was the radial you were on, just like the controller wanted. You were getting a centered CDI so you were on the requested CRS.

If you want to adjust the course after this, spin the CRS knob on the SkyView.

One added thought on this topic. Next time ATC asks for your radial, you can hit info, nearest, then VOR in map and it will show you the distance and radial for about the dozen or so closest to you.

The problem was on my end... :-[

The VOR receiver was not transmitting a signal to the skyview. its all good now.
