Hi all,

Here is a product suggestion that I believe will make the Dynon Skyview product even better.

!!!If enough users on this forum reply back and say they think it's a good idea, I'm sure Dynon will implemented this idea faster!!!

So specifically, Skyview has a widget that can be set up using various sensors. The user can then name this widget whatever name they want, set various parameters (pressures, speeds, or temperatures), and even tell Skyview to cause the widget to change colors and flash if a certain perimeter (temperature or pressure) has been exceeded.

This is good stuff…HOWEVER…What is missing is the cute little girl voice that would say “warning…warning” or “caution…caution” when that parameter is exceeded.

Naturally there are way too many different items that homebuilders could dream up that they need to monitor, so therefore it is impossible for Dynon to teach the little girl say all the various different possibilities (such as “Hydroframic Sprocket Overheat” or “Pilot Anal Temperature Exceeded”) so that improvement is a bridge too far…I get it…however...just having the little girl say “warning” or “caution” when the widget gets to the trigger point that would be helpful.

They do allow for an external LED to light up during a widget exceedance however I do not want to have this external light…if…the little girl can also talk.

Example:

I drive a pusher so therefore I want to install a Type K thermocouple in my engine compartment to watch out for an engine fire (since I would not be able to visually see it).
My plan is to design a widget called “COWL TEMP” to indicate the temperature within the engine compartment. I want to then have the widget change color from white digits to yellow digits when the temperature exceeds 300F, and then change to red digits when the temperature exceeds 700F. This is a great feature…IF…I am actually awake and looking at the widget when the fire breaks out.

I would also like the little girl to say “warning warning” and cause me to look up…IF I see the COWL TEMP showing 790F and rising rapidly then I can run my immediate action items faster than simply waiting for the engine to cough and sputter because the fuel line burned through.

So if you all think this is a good idea please reply back to this forum and promote this idea to the Dynon Team!!!

This is such a great idea that we ran right out and did it! Just download any version of SkyView 3.3 or newer!

In all seriousness, SkyView already has this feature. Just make sure the alarm is turned on for that item in sensor setup.

I think it's time to note: Read the manual and know every word before continuing on your project. It will greatly improve the end result of your aircraft.

I am always amazed at how snarky people can be when they are sitting behind a keyboard...I had hoped that this forum was a positive place "for general discussion, questions, and suggestions for Dynon's next generation avionics"  Wow...kinda sad...

Yes...I have read AND STUDIED the 496 page Installation Manual and the 232 page Pilot User Guide however I still cannot seem to find a reference to "How To Trigger Voice Audio For Customized Widget" (or equivalent).  I guess I am the only one who has missed something in OVER 700 HUNDRED pages of data.

Anyhoo...moving forward...

BEFORE posting here I had send the same suggestion/question via email to Dynon Tech Support and received this response:

"To answer your question, no there is no voice warning for this function. All voice warnings can be found in section 12 of the Pilot's User Guide.  You would see the COWL TEMP widget start flashing and if you had an external warning light connected, you could see a flashing warning on a LED on the panel...Please feel free to post this idea on the forum. If we are going to spend time and money for ideas such as this, there needs to be a demand for a feature. This idea has never been brought up to me in the blank years I have worked here, but all ideas must start somewhere.  Post it and let's see what type of response you get

If someone can kindly provide me advice or a reference on how to trigger a voice warning for a user created widget I would be most helpful.

THANKS...I appreciate your help!!!

I think there might be a bit of a misunderstanding here--the email from Dynon is referring to creating a specific voice alert, stating the words "Cowl Temperature" in the headset.

You can configure any sensor to have an alarm condition, and if it goes into the red, SkyView will announce "Engine Monitor" in your headset (this is the part that has been around since v3.3).

Obviously, Dynon can't code a specific voice alert for every possible sensor. There are specific voice prompts for common things (like "Oil Pressure", "Fuel Pressure", etc), but I've found the words "Engine Monitor" get my attention pretty fast as well. I think it's a good compromise, because by the time it's a weird enough sensor to not have a specific voice prompt, it's usually not a common enough item to be an immediate threat to flight safety.

As for references, 7-68 and later in the install manual talks about alarm conditions, and 12-5 of the pilot's guide lists the audio prompts. The part about <Engine Parameter> is what happens if an engine sensor trips an alarm.

Last, I like the idea of a specific alert for what you're configuring, but perhaps it could be something slightly more general such as "Overtemp". Then it could apply to cowls, brake rotors, heat sinks, avionics bays...etc.

Well, I wasn't being snarky. What I am referring to is you've asked some really basic questions which are easily answered by reading the manual. I would like your project to be the best it can be. It can't, if you aren't living and breathing that manual. The manual explains just about everything better then someone in a forum. Good luck on your project!

The documentation about this specific subject is unclear...especially coupled with the email from Dynon.

The catch-all behavior of saying "Engine Monitor" is only found in the pilot's guide, and you have to apply a little coding knowledge to assume that "<Engine Parameter>" means any programmable alarm, and that the alert "Engine Monitor" is played as the default only because it's listed first in the table.

Additionally, based only on the documentation..."Engine Monitor" seems like it could be a specific alert about the EMS itself. I would personally rather hear "Caution" or "Warning" for general alarms, especially since I have plenty of airframe sensors for which the term "Engine" is misleading.

This is certainly not a question easily answered in the manual--unless I have missed it as well!

Exactly !!!THANK YOU!!!

The manual was NOT very clear NOR did the text of the manual address my particular question. I was simply trying to make a POSITIVE SUGGESTION for a feature to make the Dynon product even better.

I have READ...and STUDIED...HIGHLIGHTED...reread...and UNDERLINED the manual so I am not a Dum-Bass because I missed that part. Telling me to read the manual is...just sad.

The Dynon Manual(s) are well written however even with the HUNDREDS of pages it really should be understood by all that the equipment is very sophisticated and each builder has questions that may not be answered in the text of the manual...AND...specific answers might be hidden and not easily found in the HUNDREDS of pages.

It is NOT very helpful from a customer's perspective to receive an email/ forum post reply back from Tech Support stating: "the answer is contained within the following manual [Insert link to the ENTIRE manual]"

What IS helpful is to receive a reply that states "This is how to fix/setup your equipment [explain solution] and additional information regarding this topic can be found in the XYZ Manual Section XX-X. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any additional questions"

If in the future some other user on this forum asks a similar question to the one I asked I will reply with something POSITIVE such as: "good question. I had a similar issue and I fixed it/set it up by doing [this] and I found the information in Section XX-X"

I simply ask that we all be positive and pleasant and utilize this forum for it's intended purpose and that being to help each other get the best user experience from their Dynon products and if that happens Dynon will sell more products...a WIN-WIN!!!

Again, Dynon...I GREATLY appreciate your assistants!!!

Louis,

Thank you!!! Your explanation was very clear and it helped me understand the concern better and more clear than the manual's text.

THANKS again for your help!!!
