Chris,

You are supposed to screw the locking collars down the spring until they put a little pressure on the CHT probe. It's suppposed to go a few inches into the engine, hit the bottom of the tube, and be held in by the spring.

On a second look I think I got the wrong threaded holes! I removed four plugs with an allen key to put the probes in. I think tha accessed the inlet manifold. There are other holes without plugs drilled into the fins of the cylinder head that don't have plugs. These look more plausible.
