Recognizing the remote compass

I just finished installing my D-10A and remote compass. I checked for the remote compass working by moving a magnet around the EFIS head, (no movement) and around the remote compass, (movement). Then as I tried to install the 4.0 firmware, both when I did the backup and when I did the upload, the install software said, "No remote compass detected". I did not see where I need to do any setup of the remote compass beyond calibration. I am pretty certain of the wiring. Is there anything you can think of that could cause this?

Does all the install setup have to be done prior to installing the new firmware?

I assume that I will have to reload the 4.0 after this is resolved?

Thanks,

What firmware was on your unit before 4.0?

In any case, if once the unit it up and running, the compass is shown and it moves based on a magnet near the EDC, you're OK. It's odd that your firmware upload couldn't find it, but it doesn't seem to have caused any real world problems. There's no reason to reload anything. The EDC firmware actually doesn't change in most software releases.

There is no setup for the compass besides the calibration swing on the ground. Everything else is auto-detected. It doesn't matter if you did the cal before or after the firmware. It also doesn't matter if you configure the DSAB network first or second.

Sounds like everything might be ok. I think that the software was 2.2 before? I did not get any error msgs that would indicate that the remote compass was not found or that it had a different version loaded on it today while I was over there. I installed the compass inclination and intensity and it went ok. I still need to swing the plane. I will do that tomorrow.
I also set up the OAT and that worked as well.
Will the heading and course bugs work on the HS34 without the radios installed? I noticed that I could syncronize the course bug, but could not get it to move with the knob...??

Thanks,

Heading bug will work without a radio, since that is a just an EFIS thing. Course won't work since that requires an acknowledge from the radio which isn't there. If it syncs with no radio, that's actually kind of a bug, but it isn't one that can really show itself in real use.

I just looked at a picture of the HS34. The heading bug syncs but would not move. The course would not do anything.

Hmm. That sounds like it could be a hardware problem with the HS34. The heading bug should move anytime you can see it, no matter what radios are attached or missing. The course not moving is expected.

Go into the EFIS menu and bugs and try moving it using the inc/dec buttons. If this works, I'm afraid we may need to see that HS34 and check it out.

OK, The heading bug moves when I rotate the heading knob on the HS34, BUT it only moves to the ends of the visable tape. If you wanted to say set it to your reciprical heading, you could not do it with the HS34. When you set the bug with the menu, it calls up a window and you can set the heading in the window. If it is off the screen, the bug will go to the edge of the screen on that side...Not so with the HS34. Even if the window is opened by the bug menu, the HS34 will move the bug, but will not up date the window!
Is this the way you intended it to work? Seems that the HS34 should call up and update the window as well so that you can use it to set bugs that are not just within about a 60 degree arc of your present heading.
I didnt try to toggle the heading bug display by pushing and holding the heading knob...If I had, would all this have worked with the HS34??

I am really impressed with your product! It really looks good!

It's working the way we expect it to. We expect people with an HS34 will be using the HSI page, which has a full 360 degree circle and a numerical indicator of the bug's value all the time. Spin it enough when it's up against the edge of the screen and it will pop to the other side as you cross the reciprocal heading. Actually, this makes it easy to set a reciprocal!
