Remote compass not detected on D180

The D180 is installed in an RV-12 being built E-LSA so everything came pretty much prewired but I am getting the error message. I attempted to access the CLUTTR menu item but could not find it. I understand that some of the settings for the RV-12 installation are locked. The unit currently has the 5.4 version. If I have to reinstall the software I have to know how to do this.

Not sure what the question here is. Yes, some things on the Vans FlightDEK-D180s are locked, and CLUTTR is one of them. However, you wouldn't need the CLUTTR menu to troubleshoot that. You'd only use that to turn off the entire heading tape, which doesn't really solve the problem of the compass not being detected.

Software never has to be reinstalled, per say, but when new software versions are released, Vans releases a companion settings file that allows the Vans units to be upgraded and keeps the Vans settings intact (and gives you any new ones that might have been implemented that they've helpfully preset for you).

The basic question is - How do I get the D180 to recognize the remote compass? Maybe I complicated it by assuming some of what I may have to do.

There is nothing to do to make it recognize it. It is 100% automatic. If it isn't working, it's either mis-wired or something is broken.

Using the wiring schematic by M. Miller that I downloaded from the VAF Forum and checking the continuity between the 9-pin D-sub at the EDC and the 37-pin FUS D-sub and after reconnecting the FUS D-sub to the board I checked the relative pins in the 25-pin EIFS D-sub. The testing confirmed that the wiring was not the problem. After reconnecting everything I switched the avionics on and got no error message. I didn't find a problem or fix anything. Go figure.

Rick,

There are more things that can cause this than "just the wiring." I was plagued with the same issue, finally replacing all the pins on both end of the remote compass harness and even then crimping the female pins just a bit so that they would "grip more."

I haven't had the opportunity to fly much since then, although in those few flights the problem did not recur. The bigger bugaboo will be if it is a micro crack in the circuit board somewhere - this could cause an intermittent connection due to heating / cooling. All you can really do is fly your airplane a lot and be on the lookout for a subsequent failure. Then if it happens, it's probably time to send the remote compass in.
