Replacement ADAHRS installed, configured and "Ready" but "Not Detected"

My SV-ADAHRS-200 failed, so Dynon sent me a replacement. I installed the replacement, but on my initial boot-up, I got a large "ADAHRS FAIL" message and red X on my HDX display. I followed the HDX Installation Guide's instructions for calibrating the new ADAHRS. That seemed to work because the Network Status page then said that the status of the new ADAHRS (with the new unit's serial number) is "Ready." The HDX display still showed "ADAHRS FAIL" but the Warning window explained that the ADAHRS needs a compass calibration (i.e., "NEED COMPASS CAL"). So I went to the Hardware Calibration page of the Setup Menu to do that. But the ADAHRS Calibration page is greyed out. It says "ADAHRS CALIBRATION (AHRS NOT DETECTED)", and it cannot be selected. The ADAHRS Calibration page is necessary in order to get to the Compass Calibration page. So now I'm stuck. My ADAHRS fails because its compass needs to be calibrated, but I can't get to the Compass Calibration page to do that. Is there a solution?

Lon, First make sure Reversion mode is turned off when doing the network configuration. SYSTEM SETUP > SCREEN LAYOUT SETUP > REVERSION MODE ENABLED, set it to NO Now, disconnect the network connection to the ADAHRS, perform a network configuration and exit setup. Shut the whole system down, reconnect the ADAHRS, power the system back up and perform another network configuration. Exit setup and see if it is alive.
If not, shoot us an e-mail with your user settings files SYSTEM SOFTWARE > EXPORT SETTINGS to support@dynonavionics.com and include the serial number of the ADAHRS I will look at it and send back a file to load on the system.

Don, I didn’t build or put the replacement ADAHRS in the plane, so I have to ask: How do I “disconnect the network connection to the ADAHRS”? Is it a “Disconnect” option in the System Setup menu? Or do I have to physically unplug a cable from the ADAHRS to the network? (Thanks for responding so quickly, on a Saturday evening no less.)

Yes, physical disconnect. It is the hardware connection to the ADAHRS on a 9 pin connector.

Don and Kelly, Thanks so much for your advice. I went to my hangar today, intending to do exactly what you recommended. Alas, I wasn't able to, and I need to ask for some more advice, please.

My plane is a Van's RV-12. The ADAHRS is in the tail cone, behind the seats, behind the baggage compartment, and behind the baggage compartment bulkhead. This means the ADAHRS is very difficult to get to. I am too old, too bulky and not limber enough to get to it myself, so my mechanic removed the old ADAHRS and installed the new one. He is young, thin and limber; and even he said the job was "tough."

If I could have gotten to the ADAHRS myself, it would have been a simple matter for me to disconnect it. It has only one 9-pin connector attached to it, and its location is obvious. But, since I cannot get to it myself, I went to my hangar this morning hoping I could disconnect the ADAHRS from the HDX display itself.

My plane is equipped with dual HDXs, and I know how to get to the back of those and how to unplug cables from them. But the PFD has two 9-pin connector sockets, and the MFD has one 9-pin connector socket. Unfortunately, I cannot tell which of the three is the connector for the ADAHRS. The diagrams in the Dynon Installation Guide are not detailed enough to show where the ADAHRS connects to the HDXs. The Van's RV-12 Kit Builder's Guide has a very clear illustration of how to mount the ADAHRS and where the 9-pin connector and cable attach to the ADAHRS. But the Kit Builder's Guide does not show where the cable should be attached to the HDXs.

Are you able to tell me where the ADAHRS cable would be attached to the HDXs in a standard, dual HDX system? If not, is there a work-around I could use that doesn't involve disconnecting the ADAHRS?

I have not wired or mucked around with the factory RV12 system but it would be easy enough to find a 5 way hub that is likely behind the instrument panel. You might be able to tell which cable runs from the tail cone to the front that way. Simply disconnect things, then do as Don suggested above. You do not have to un-plug the ADAHRS at the unit itself.

Hope that helps.

Thanks David. My plane is an ELSA, and I don’t see a 5 way hub behind the instrument panel. I didn’t build the plane, but I did get the Kit Builder’s Guide that the builder relied on. The Guide doesn’t show a hub. As a result, I think the ADAHRS was wired directly to one (or both) of the HDX displays. I just can’t tell which one.

Fixed!

I think the problem has been fixed, though the way it was done surprised me. I inferred from Don's post on Saturday that the problem was a glitch in the Settings file. Even though the Network Status page showed the new ADAHRS was connected and "Ready," I thought perhaps the configuration process did not update the Settings file with the new ADAHRS's settings. So I went to the hangar to download the Settings file, hoping that Don would send me an updated or corrected Settings file, and that would fix everything, even without me disconnecting the ADAHRS.

Just before I left for the hangar, I read a new post in this Forum titled "Network Status Error," in which Rdone said he fixed a network problem by rebooting several times. Albert Einstein once said that "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Yesterday, I recalibrated and rebooted at least a couple of times. But encouraged by Rdone's success, I recalibrated and rebooted again today. And this time, it worked!

I still have to do a compass calibration, and it looks like an altimeter calibration too. But if I don't show up in this thread again, everything is now working as it should.

Thanks to those who took time to help me.

Lon,
You were correct in your assumptions in that the new serial number doesn't get written to the config file. I have had to edit a few files to plug the serial number in manually and presto. You must have forced a rewrite by multiple reboots and solved it. Good Job!
