Setting the Course when navigating with GPS

How do I set/change the course on the HSI when navigating to a GPS point? This is very basic functionality of any regular HSI.
Is this possible with the Skyview?

I do not believe that you can adjust the OBS when navigating via GPS. Under GPS navigation, the OBS is irrelevant unless using the function that simulates a VOR. Some here could explain that functionality better.

Yup, that is exactly what I would like to do. Be able to set/dial in an arbitrary radial to a GPS waypoint. Just like a VOR.
A common ATC instruction is to report crossing a specific radial or track a radial in or out.

It seems a bit silly to rely a 20 year old Garmin GPSMap 96 handheld to be able to perform this most basic function.

No, normally it would be a VOR. But there is no reason why it could not be any arbitrary GPS point, intersection etc.

For example, during training we would pick a point in the training area to practice holding patterns. If you cannot easily set the OBS then I cannot see how it is possible to use the SkyView to fly a hold at an waypoint?

Have a look at a steam driven HSI (eg Bendix-King KI-525A HSI)

Notice the two knobs? One is the heading bug and the other is the OBS.
The OBS is used for setting the desired course to anything (0-359) regardless of what is used as the navigation source.

You should be able to set OBS mode from the Flight Plan menu (in other words, you have to have the waypoint/intersection/whatever in your flight plan before you can use OBS mode). Once in OBS mode, you can adjust the inbound course to the waypoint using the CRS function of the PFD joystick knob. Refer to "OBS MODE" in the Dynon Pilots User Guide. (ninelima, I thought you said you read the manual several times???)

I think you can also enter OBS mode by selecting a navigable point from the nearest list, the flight plan, or the Info page and then pressing and holding the Direct->To button for 2 seconds.

Clearly, I have not read the manual well enough yet :-/ ... In my defense, there is an awful lot of information there to assimilate. I was chasing my tail with the HSI and CDI in chapter 4 of the manual and some of the videos on YouTube. I did not think to look under the FPL menu.

Yeah, I got my IFR ticket back in the days when an HSI was a luxury, so I know how they work... I do know that when flying IFR, I have to have an *approved* navigation source, and the Dynon is not that. I have a 430W, which has the OBS button it and you can set the course on the Dynon, but in the usual manner (select OBS mode on the GNS, then set CRS on the Dynon).

I see the question appears to have been answered as to how to do it solely on the Dynon, but as I mentioned...AFAIK that's not a legal way to fly IFR.

Yes, you are correct.

However, you can be on any "FR" you like, if you depart Gaborone to the East you will very likely be instructed to cross or track radial 120 GSV outbound and report FIR boundry. That is just how they roll there ;-)
