Hello,

have dual SV 1000 + Dynon transponder working flawless running 4.0.
Live in South America, where ADSB weather and traffic is not avaiable yet. Dont use the Dynon GPS either, it's licenced but have no Jeppesen subscription, also we don't have free FAA navigation database.
Is it really necessary to update to 5.0 or can I leave it untill the next update and then just skip this Transponder update and go direcly to the next Firmware?
Can't see any advantage on doing this risky update in my country, except I would have the transponder switching from "Ground"  to "Alt" automaticaly.
My system is working really fine on 4.0, and I don't feel confortable doing this huge upgrade.

I'd wait, if it does what you want now &, as you say, working ok then why upgrade?  IMO it's probably better to wait
to see if all is ok with the new versions ;)

You can upgrade to 5.0 and NOT upgrade the transponder, by the way. In other words, you can keep the existing transponder software, but still get all the other small improvements and bug fixes that 5.0 offers. The transponder has its own opt-in software update.

Just sucessfully updated to 5.0 and tested the new Screen Swap and Reversionary Mode. Perfect !
Was one click away of updating the transponder, wich is still working normally under the old software. Still hesitate here, considering I have NO ADS-B Receiver, and ADS-B services are not avaiable in my region anyway. Would be nice to have the automatic ALT/GND Mode change and be able to see a green instead of the yellow "out of date" status line.
Should one upgrade the Transponder Software, even not having any ADS-B device?

If you want the new Alt/Gnd feature, then yes. Though it's theoretically possible for ANY software update to not complete successfully, which could require return to service, the transponder is not any different than other components. It needs to be kicked of manually for regulatory reasons primarily, not because of any higher risk. The risk of the upgrade going badly is extremely low, period.

OK, just upgraded the Transponder Sofware also, flawless, everything is working grate, now I have automatic Ground/Alt, regulated by indicated airspeed, just like the heavys, one thing less to bother and forget.
Also upgraded to 5.1, great improvements, the whole system seems to work softer and more integrated. ::)
