Skyview Classic / ADSB In Question

I have a Skyview Classic with ADSB-OUT installed. I want to now add ADSB-IN. I know I can buy the SV-ADSB 472 box for $770 or so which I suppose will display all ADSB In data on the Skyview screen and could also send the data via WiFi to ForeFlight APP on my IPad if I desire.

My question is this...

If I had one of the portable ADSB boxes sold by various other manufacturers for MUCH less than $770, is there a way to send that data stream to the Skyview system so that it could be displayed on the Skyview screen, or would I only be able to display the portable data on my IPad?

Thanks, Joe

Unfortunately, the Dynon will not accept ADSB in from anything except their very expensive SV ADSB 472.

Of course, you could always try to build your own interface box to take the 3rd party datastream, parse it, and then reassemble it into the Dynon-expected format to hand to the Skyview. But the time, materials, testing and general aggravation that go with the debugging process there is worth a LOT more than the price of the 472.

Not to mention the fact that now when traffic shows up on your screen, or worse yet on your visual scan but NOT on the screen, you don't know if the problem is in your box or not.

So yeah, it probably could be done. And no, it probably shouldn't be done.

Well, wait a minute. While Dynon does not support the standardized GDL90 ADS-B protocol it DOES support another protocol, FLARM TRAFFIC which also can carry ADS-B traffic. Stratux does support serial out (additional hardware required) and the Stratux Europe Edition carries both ADS-B and FLARM traffic and some folks here in the forum have already successfully connected such a Stratux with Dynon using a serial connection.

Thanks and yes, I looked at Reddit and the other thread on here where you talked about doing that. After reading, I wasn't sure that I would still be able to receive weather using the European Stratux and the whole process seemed a little over my head. I think I would need some dumbed down information on exactly what would be involved for me to go that route.

So build a European Stratux, but then exactly what if anything needs to be changed in order to receive the 978 & 1090 freqs? I understand a serial port card will need to be installed on the European Stratux, so that I can plug into Dynon.. What else is involved?

Thanks for the reply!

From my experience, the problem is trust. If you build or buy your own ADSB in unit, how can you be sure that the data is good? Furthermore, how can you be sure that the unit hasn't failed when it is telling you there is no traffic? what happens when your $5 usb cigarette lighter power supply fails? Then who is looking outside while you have your head down troubleshooting a bad antenna connection? All of a sudden you are unsure about traffic, have lost situational awareness, and then.....????

I have a 472 on order.

We all have our justifications for why we do or don't buy a piece of gear. EVERYTHING in the airplane is subject to failure at sometime or another. The ADSB isn't a replacement for looking outside. I've been flying for over 40 years without ADSB and I'm still alive! I'm not very fearful if at some point my ADSB fails that I'm going to die, regardless if it's a failed Dynon 472 or a Stratux.. Anyway, I'll probably end up buying a 472, but for reasons that are very different from yours. Thanks for your input..

You can easily use a European Stratux, it is just a config switch away as in Europe we have enabled 868FLARM/OGN and disabled 978UAT.

This is how it looks before changing it (this is the default for EU):

This is how it looks after changing it for US:

Of course I have to admit that you need some skills to build and use a Stratux and particularly the serial connection to the Dynon and it may still fail for many reasons (crappy GPS, bad power supply, broken antennas ...). But I built many Stratux versions and learned a lot over the years.

The major supplier for Stratux devices in the US is: https://crewdogelectronics.com which obviously will ship with the US version so you have to burn your own SD card with the EU version from here: https://github.com/b3nn0/stratux/releases (using e.g. etcher).
