Dynon has issued a Service Bulletin for SkyView displays, to cover a quality defect that we found in some shipped units. If you have a SkyView system please read http://dynonavionics.com/docs/support_bulletin_021113.html

As a summary, we had some displays fail in the field. With an intense investigation along with good cooperation from a circuit board vendor, we traced a circuit board defect caused by a wash process not being done correctly. Over time, along with temperature changes and vibration, small contaminants can damage the circuit traces between the board layers.

The time period that we shipped displays with these boards is approximately mid-2010 to mid-2011, although not all displays shipped during that period are subject to the Service Bulletin. The Service Bulletin contains a process to determine for sure if you have one of the suspect circuit boards.

We are paying for the shipment of displays for repairs under this Service Bulletin, as well as applying a new three-year warranty starting on January 1, 2013 for displays that are affected by it.

I got my Skyview about in the middle of the problem time. I have it mounted in the panel, but cannot power it up with all the accessories for some time yet. Obviously I can spare it to you easily now, but not so much so later on in the build.
Is it remotely possible to tell from my serial number if I got a bad one or not?

Send us your serial number and screen size and we can tell you with pretty good confidence if your unit is in the TSB batch.

Your display is most likely not affected, but, the only way to know for sure is to upgrade to 5.1 as is stated in the bulletin

By the way, though there is a loose correlation to serial number, not all numbers within the range are affected (in fact, many aren't), and there are some the may be outside the range that are. So for that reason, only the upgrade to 5.1 can tell you definitively whether or not your display should head back here for repair. For that reason, we won't be providing any further guidance based on serial number (you got the only answer, Don, but you should still upgrade to be sure).

Thanks for the answer.
So, first off, is there any way to "cheat" and just power up the display, add 5.1 and check it out, or do I have to have the whole system connected up first?
Second question, it may just be far easier to send it to you and let you make the determination, is that an option?

Or, if you have a backup battery, you can just plug that in and press button #1 for two seconds and it will boot.

Not as simple as I hoped. I plugged the battery in for the first time, and nothing would come on. A battery voltage test shows essentially a dead SV-Bat-320, it has never been connected previously!
I cannot charge it normally, but can with a small charger, but I cannot find which wire is positive and which is negative. A search of the archives of this forum indicated that perhaps 1 is ground andl 3 is positive, so how do I find which is 1 and which is three?

DO NOT CHARGE THE BATTERY MANUALLY.

The battery is a lithium-ion battery that needs a special charger to charge. If your battery is dead, then you need to figure out a way to get the SkyView display powered up off a 10-30V source.

OK guidance accepted, hope it will be OK to sit dead for another 6 months or so. I was going to charge it with one of my LiOn battery tool chargers.
Still, I can power it at the SV Bat 320 receptacle, but still need to know which is positive and which is negative (wire color indication would help).

Got that figured out, screen came alive for first time!! The hardware group is not displayed, but I have not yet installed 5.1 upgrade. Currently trying to figure out just how to do that.

Dynon Avionics released a Revision B of the SkyView Display Circuit Board Replacement Technical Service Bulletin on March 4, 2013. This Revision B supersedes and replaces an earlier version of this bulletin that was originally released on Feb. 11, 2013.

The original bulletin specified a SkyView-based on-screen detection method to determine whether or not a display was affected. However, displays that were thought to be unaffected based on the on-screen detection method may actually be affected by this bulletin.

Therefore, ALL SkyView displays, whether or not they were already checked against the original service bulletin on this topic, must be re-checked using the updated instructions that are available at SkyView Display Circuit Board Replacement - Revision B.
