Skyviews quit on start

Is this normal?

Turn the master on and both skyviews activate.

As soon as I turn the start switch on they both go blank.

When Starter switch is released they start functioning again.

So, I have to wait to see if I have oil pressure.

I don't have a back up battery. Do I need one for starting?

Yes, this is normal on many planes. SkyView needs at least 6V to keep running, and many planes with small batteries and large starters drop below this as they start. There are lots of airplanes that do not do this however. The backup battery will fix this.
