I do not understand how to tell to the GTR 225 how to speak to the Skyview.

I have the feeling that only the GTR 255 can do that. I cannot find anything in the menu

See page 6-3 of the Rev B install guide for the 255. You need to set the IO MODE of the serial port to NMEA.

You have to do this in setup mode, not standard user mode.

just to hep others. the way to go in setup mode. I was just able to go in standard user mode. Probably my french side that did not help to read fast this manual:

Configuration mode is used to configure the GTR/GNC settings for each specific installation. To access configuration mode, remove power from the GTR/GNC. With the GTR/GNC turned off, press and hold the ENT key and apply power to the GTR/GNC by turning the COM volume knob clockwise. Release the ENT key when the display activates and ‘Garmin’ appears on the screen.

To sum this up:

Problem: SL40 Frequencies Don't Display On SkyView Display (firmware v6.0 and later)

Explanation: There is a missing wire between the SL40 and the control module; this wire transmits frequency data from the SL40 to the SkyView display. Without this wire, configuring the serial port will display a Red X in the upper right corner of the SkyView display.

Solution:
Add a wire between:
Control Module NAV/COM connector, Pin 6 (NAV/COM DATA 2A)
and
SL40 Pin 3 (RS232 TX)

Then, configure SkyView Serial Port 4:
SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > SERIAL PORT SETUP > SERIAL PORT 4 SETUP > SERIAL IN DEVICE > GARMIN / APOLLO SL40 > ACCEPT (button)

It may be necessary to configure the radio frequencies to display on SkyView:
SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > DISPLAYED COM > GARMIN / APOLLO SL40 (PORT 4) > ACCEPT (button)

Hi,

I was expecting Vans to ship me the missing cable crimped correctly (wh-f1102).
While waiting for the cable to arrive, I did the upgrade to ver 6.0 and configured the display of the comm as per your description above.
I obviously got a red cross on the top of the display.

Today I added the cable, hoping to see the frequencies in the SV display, but nothing came out.
I upgraded to 7.1, with same result, reboot 1+2+5 several times, (after every unsuccessful change), revert to no-serial config for sl40, reset to sl40 settings...  same red cross!

Any hint on how to troubleshoot this one? Could it be related to the revers order of action? Do I need to do any setup on the SL40?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Are you saying that the actual serial port settings go away when you go back into the menu? Or just that you're still seeing the red X after you change the settings?

After each time you change them to the SL40, do you exit the setup menu with the menu keys, or do you reboot right from that menu? (you need to do the former. If you do the latter, you won't save the settings).

The actual serial settings stay correctly as changes are done and saved, as expected (I exit with the menu keys).

The issue is that I still have the red cross, as before the cable was installed, (and cable shows continuity).

I wonder if there was something to be setup on the SL40, or if the fact that SV was expecting the connection before it actually happened could have spoiled something.
Any idea on what to look next?

Thks in advance

There aren't any settings on the SL-40 side, and there's about connecting it beforehand that could cause it to not work now. In that serial port settings, what do all of the settings say? Also look at the TX counter, RX counter and next 3 lines as well. What are they each doing? Also, if you have multiple displays, do you have the SL-40 connected to both in parallel?
