I fly motor gliders so current draw is a concern when the engine is off.
Is there a sleep or power down mode to the display?
What happens to the transponder if power is turned off to the display? Does the transponder change mode or shut down?

You can always power off the display by holding the left button for 2 seconds. This is completely off. In this mode, your transponder is also shut down (assuming it's the Dynon transponder)

There is no other low power mode. About 1/2 of the power the system draws is for the screen backlight, so you can manually dim the screen as an option to lower power draw.

OK, how about this idea for operating the transponder with SkyView powered down?

I assume that the Dynon transponder is identical to the Trig TT21/22. Correct?

From the Trig install manual, it looks like if I added a Trig TC20 control head to the panel and switched several transponder pins between the SkyView and Trig Control head, I could power off the SkyView and use the Trig Control head to operate the transponder normally.

On the transponder DB25 connector pins 2,3, and 13 would have to be switched.
Pin 11 may have to be switched, and pins 17 and 20 may have to be disconnected if the SkyView uses them.

Am I headed in the right direction, or is there a hidden problem?

The Dynon transponder and the Trig do not run the same software. You cannot control a Dynon module with a Trig control head or vice versa.

The TSO requires that within a few seconds of the user control device going offline, the Transponder must stop transmitting, hence we are not allowed by regulation to keep transmitting when SkyView is off.
