Software update prior to any installation

I have two SV1000T displays that have just come out of the box. I connected one to a 12V battery and it booted. During the start-up script, the display indicated VERSION: 13.0.3.3233 (built on Aug 5, 2015).

With power to the SV1000, I connected a recently purchased back-up battery and it did not charge (I got a low-voltage warning). I measured the voltage of the battery and it was 11.8V. According to the most recent manual, only software version 15.0 and later will charge a discharged backup battery with voltage below 12.25V.

MY QUESTION: Can I update the software of my SV1000 prior to any other set-up or configuration (e.g., entering N-number, etc)? If yes, do I just download the most recent software onto a USB drive and then plug it in to the Dynon after the start-up script has executed? Is there a prompt or do I need to scroll through a menu in order to update?

I have reviewed the installation manual, but I am am unable to find clear guidance for this situation.

Thanks for any assistance.

You need voltage ABOVE 12.25V for SkyView to charge the backup battery. This is so you don't discharge your aircraft battery to charge SkyView's when your alternator isn't running.

You can update your SkyView display right away. See http://www.dynonavionics.com/skyview-software-updates.php for both the download packages and installation instructions. Once you have your transponder connected, you may need to update it from within the transponder menu. SkyView will have its update for it. All of the other modules will automatically update via SkyView Network when they are first detected as you hook things up and run the SkyView Network Configuration.

Dynon Support - thanks.

When I connected my battery to the SV1000T display loaded with software Version 13, I got a warning that the battery was low. I assume this means that (1) the battery was actually recognized by the SV and that (2) the SV will charge the backup batter if I provide 12.25V or greater to the SV Display (installation manual says 5A or greater charger should be connected).

Thank you for your patience!
