Splicing Serial Connections

I'm planning to upgrade the avionics in my aircraft with two Skyview HDX displays and other Dynon components. All five available serial ports will be used.

Dynon recommend the serial Tx and Rx wires are spliced and connected to both HDX displays. At the moment I'm planning to use solder sleeves but, at minimum, that's going to require 10 solder sleeves and perhaps more when the power connections for the SV-GPS-2020 and other serial devices are considered. That will potentially result in a bulky collection of solder sleeves behind the displays.

How have others addressed this issue. Are there any other alternatives to solder sleeves?

I wired all serial connections onto a 37-pin D-connector and created a mating solder D-connector that connects the spliced pairs by soldeting very short bridge wires directly on the connector. This allows me toverify connections between the different unit by removing the plug, and gives the wiring a stable point to connect to.

It is a pain. I have a 3 screen Dynon panel. I used all 5 serial ports. I used solder and shrink tube to build the harness. I generally don’t like soldering, but any other method was going to create a lot of bulk. All the wiring with the connections is throughly secured to prevent fatigue at the solder joint. It has been trouble free for 420 hours so far. I would have preferred a more elegant solution, but could not think of one that did not add a lot of bulk. I will be interested to hear what solutions others have thought of. Splitting the 5 volt power supply 5 ways was also a pain. I needed 5 volts for, oil pressure, fuel pressure, manifold pressure, elevator trim position and Aithre CO detector.

Thanks to those who have replied this post so far.

For those of you who have installed two SkyView EFIS displays before and used the Dynon SV-HARNESS-D37, how practical is it to remove the serial port Tx and Rx wires from the harness and daisy chain them from one D37 plug to the other D37 plug. That would change a "Y" wire arrangement that involves the two arms of the "Y" being spliced or crimped to a "L" arrangement where a serial port wire comes into one D37 Plug and is joined at the plug's pin to another wire which runs to the second D37 connector. Thoughts?

Getting two wires in a d-sub connector crimp pin is not always easy, it depends on the wire thickness. Adding 10 slices inside the connector also doesn't leave much room, but you don't want to do it outside the connector as that part of the cable probably needs to be flexible. Also the cable bundle to the Dynon increases by 10 wires, making it stiffer, and this is the bundle you want to have a 'service loop' in so you can remove the Dynon from the panel. It's probably a battle you can't win ...

Solder sleeves are not necessarily a good idea, depending on who you ask. But there is a logical reason for that. Solder sleeves are somewhat known for making bad connections.


Or just ordinary butt splicing.

Put a DB9 connector then use a DB9 Splitter so you can connect two devices. They come in both Male to Female/Female and Female to Male/Male.
I have 3 Dynon EFIS displays and I used all 5 serial ports. That is a lot of extra bulk behind the instrument panel. I think bare crimp connectors and shrink tube is a far better solution. There is also the 5 volt wire from the EMS that I had to send to 5 places.

I am in the process of designing the wiring on a dual-display HDX system. This Skyview Interconnect Board (see attached) has been a lifesaver! Brian Adams <hr2plt@yahoo.com> designed it and sells it. It takes care of the many, many splices that would otherwise be required. This is about as close to plug-and-play as you can get!

It's a pretty neat board--well thought out. Similar to the intent of the Advanced Flight Systems' "Advanced Control Module" (make installation as plug-and-play as possible). See attached.

Building the harnesses doesn't concern me and I was expecting to do that. However, I was concerned about an unsightly bundle of solder sleeves or butt joins to split the serial connections to the two HDX screens I plan to install. I'm favouring using the SkyView interconnect board at the moment and have been in touch with Brian about that.
