This could be user error by me since it is the first time that I am trying to select a different HSI then the Auto Pilot in Skyview.

I installed the ARINC-429 as shown in the installation manual figure 153 and connected the Serial RX (pin 3) of the ARINC-429 to GPS RS 232 OUT 2 (P4001 Pin 58).

I configured the Skyview and the Garmin 430W as described in the ARINC-429 installation just after figure 153.

I need help to make this work, but I also have a couple of questions on the Garmin 430 Main RS232 Config.
1) The instructions in the Skyview installation manual show the required selection for Chanx (2) Output as "Avaition", but no selection Input. What should the Input selection be?
2) I think that Chan1 is used to connect to my transponder (Garmin 327). Chan2 Input is set to Icarus-alt and Output to Aviation. Can I have 2 channels with an Output of "Aviation"?

Thank you...

1.) SkyView is only receiving information from the GPS 430 on RS232, that is why we have the Chan X (1 or 2) OUTPUT set to: Aviation and no mention of the INPUT.

2.) The Garmin 430 should be able to have 2 OUTPUTS set to Aviation. If the Garmin 430 is wired and configured per Fig. 153 on pg. 12-7 of our Installation Manual it should be set up correctly for our system.

Sorry for a bit of bad information before- but the 430 CANNOT have two output set to the same format. If you need AVIATION to go to two devices, you have to split the wire.

Appreciate your help. I will try a couple of experiments to get this to work. Do not understand splitting the wire since the channels are separate (Chan 1, 2, 3, 4) and I thought that Aviation was just a setting.

After the experiments I may need to call in for help since I do need to have the Garmin 430 controlling the Skyview Autopilots. Thank you and Happy Holidays.

Alex,

You are correct. Aviation is just a format for the RS232 output. What Support is saying is that if you need Aviation format for one device and any other format (NMEA for example) for another device you could have each be an output of a different RS232 channel of the 430. If you have 2 devices that need the RS232 data from the 430 and both require Aviation format, you would take the one channel out of the 430 set to Aviation format and split that so the single channel goes to both devices. One serial channel output can normally feed up to three devices.

The issue is the 430 doesn't let you set two serial channels to the same format in software. No idea why, but if one is set to Aviation, it won't let you set a second one to Aviation.

Unless a newer firmware changes this...

No I understand and odd that the Garmin 430 SW does not allow you to set 2 different channels to Aviation, but it would be simply enough to split one wire.

One more question and then back to trying to make this work.

I am assuming that having a setting for the Input of the Channel on the 430 has no affect on the Skyview and only the Output set to Aviation is all that is needed? Is that correct? I am asking because Garmin 430 SW requires a selection for Input and if the selection is off, then the channel is not used. Thank you.

Each channel has inputs & outputs - you can turn any of them OFF or allocate a function to it.  If you want say Aviation out to multiple devices ( usually max of 4) then that can come from only 1 channel. Most Gps's , if not all, will not allow functions eg Aviation, ADSB + etc on multiple channels.
