When SkyView is powered down (by holding button #1) but the AC battery (maintained at 12.2 v by charger) is still available, will SV-BAT be recharged back to 12.2v?

There must be power to SkyView, and it must be turned on, for the backup battery to charge.

The logic behind this is that SkyView manages the charge, and it only takes a couple of hours. With the D10/D100/D180 series the battery trickle-charged without the instrument on, but would take many hours to do so.

I have an RV-6A with a Odyssey PC680 battery and the aircraft is not ready for flight. SV-BAT is depleted. Has anyone used a charging system or power supply that would boot Skyview and enable it to recharge SV-BAT? Requires 5 amps for 2 hours.

The SkyView will only charge the battery if the input voltage is above 12.25V, but any chargers will do this while the battery is on the charger. It will not charge if the battery is the only power source.

You can use a cheap charger like this one from Harbor Freight:

That charger will do 6A, so it would work fine. You'll need to let it charge the aircraft battery first so all the amps aren't going there.

Oh, and just to make it clear- if you are using a charger like this, you must have the charger hooked to a battery, and the SkyView connected to that. You can't power just the SkyView off a charger like that. Not an issue for the original poster, but if anyone else is looking for a setup.

Successfully charged the SV-BAT to 11.9v using the referenced Harbor Freight charger ($35) set to 6 amp over a 2 hr period. Near the end of charging, the charger shifts to an "adsorption" mode and lowers the voltage below what Skyview needs. Disconnecting the charger, loading the A/C battery (Nav lights - 6 amps) will lower its charge enough to allow the charger to shift back to "bulk" charge (13.2v).

I'd sure like to see a future way to allow a trickle charge to SV-BAT since most aircraft don't fly much more than 1% of the time.
