SV Classic Mounting

A few SV Classic screens are appearing on the market as a result of HDX upgrades. When I look for mounting tray options the Dynon Universal Mounting Tray repeatedly appears, but the description specifically states 'Not compatible' for Classic, Touch, and SE installations. What did folks use for their original SV-1000 installations? Is it possible to modify the Universal Tray to work with an SV-1000?

The installation manual that covers the SkyView product line doesn't seem to provide a solution, at least not that I can find. A tray of some type would make mounting the various sensor and accessory units much easier.

The classic displays have 6 mounting screws rather than the 4 in the HDX. They are also in different locations and the mounting cutout for the display is about 1/2" or so taller. I think it would certainly be possible to modify the mounting tray to accommodate a classic. It would take some work putting in at least 4 more nutplates but it seems doable.

I did notice the cutout dimension difference. Placing and securing additional nutplates is not a problem (I built my airplane). However, I don't know what other traps there might be. I'm still curious how the original installations were accomplished. The manual only seems to address HDX installations. If anyone has insight on this I'd appreciate any guidance.

Before the trays you were on your own as to where to mount accessories. On both of the planes I built I just attached the screens to the panel with nutplates appropriately placed. I fabricated an "avionics tray" to mount things like the EMS, battery, ADSB etc.... pretty much the same function as the mounting tray. Doesn't have to be mounted to the panel.

Got it. Thanks. I'm starting to understand that some of the SV accessories can be rather remote from the screens. Where did you mount the ADAHRS? It looks like some installations put a shelf for it back in the tail (In an RV just behind the baggage panel),

Yes, on RV my ADAHRS is behind baggage compartment.

The ADAHRS unit in my RV-8 is also mounted behind the aft baggage compartment. Mine is mounted roughly halfway between the aft baggage bulkhead and the next bulkhead aft so any metal stuff placed in the baggage area won't interfere with the built-in magnetometer in the ADAHRS unit.

The snippet below show the ADAHRS location requirements from the installation manual:

N144SH and RV8JD . . . Thank you for your replies! Running the Pitot/Static/AOA tubing to the back makes total sense. This is significantly different than what I had to do for my current D180 installation that has an integrated ADAHRs. I actually already have a shelf a couple of bays behind the baggage wall for that system's EDC-D10A Remote Compass. I can switch that out for the SV-ADAHRS-200. And making my own tray for the modules to be placed behind the panel is not a problem.

Much appreciation for getting me pointed in the right direction.

It wouldn't be difficult to fabricate a tray like the one that Dynon sells for the HDX. Anyone with rudimentary sheet metal skills and a pan brake could do it for you. I'll bet theres someone at the EAA chapter that would help.

I did something a little different with my 2 7" classic displays. I wanted to be able to pull the center instrument panel on my RV-8 without disassembling the radio trays. So, here's what I came up with:

Thanks. I'm actually very comfortable with fabrication. I have a small brake and easy access to an industrial shear. I made numerous fixtures throughout the build of my RV-7A. It's still educational to see how others approach solutions to mounting components.

I've been taking measurements of my panel to assess which SV Classic hardware to buy. I've been quite happy with the info display of my current D180/D100 combo setup. Current thinking is to replace those with two SV 7-inch screens. How content are you with the split-view EFIS/Map display on your primary 7-inch screen? I assume the second display is intended for EMS functions. To me it really feels like the 10-inch display might be overkill, but actual user data is always better to have.

Just saw this.

I haven't flown mine yet. Still building.

But, I did put it together enough to sit in the pilot's seat with the interior/seat cushions and instrument panel in place and it looks to me like the 2 7" displays will be just fine. In a perfect world, I'd have the 2 HDX displays. But 2 classics will still be very nice for me.

I like having 2 displays. It seems to me that having at least the same number of screens as you have ADAHARS modules makes sense.
