SV External Dimming

There's a reference in the SV Installation Guide (p 4-16) to external screen dimming using a 0-36VDC control signal on D37 P25.  Is 36V a maximum, or is the full 0-36V range required?

What I'm getting at is, do I need to install a 36V source, or will a potentiometer on 14V ship's power work?

If the latter, what do you recommend for potentiometer value, taper and wattage?

36V is the max. You can define the brightness vs. voltage curve in the setup menu, so you can give it any range you want.

SkyView has automatic dimming via a light sensor as well as the ability to dim using the buttons. Is there a reason you want to install a knob to dim it manually? This feature is there more if you want it synchronized with a dimmer you already have that dims other things, not to add a specific one just for SkyView, which it sounds like you are doing.

If you really go that way, a 1K or 10K pot will work fine. Linear taper or log is fine, and any wattage is also fine.

If I did it, it would be to dim everything with one knob.

I should have said in my initial post that I'm in the early planning stages and don't yet own any Dynon gear. Perhaps I'm overdoing it, but I've read most of the installation guide to get an idea how the pieces go together, what their capabilities are, and how they function. I figure there's no better way to determine equipment needs and cost.

Anyway, thanks for the fast reply. Customer and product support will weigh heavily in my decisions on avionics. This forum makes choosing Dynon easy in that respect.

If you're using a pot to dim everything else, then you mostly need to look at what they need, since we should be able to use the signal you create for your other avionics. Of course, if you do it right, it will all be Dynon stuff

I dont exactly know what I did wrong but....I like it

I tried to use a single Dimmer to control the Skyview, Garmin 650 screen, Garmin 650 bezel and knobs, and my backlit rocker switches on the dash which are LED.

The problem was I was told by somebody ( no names here) that I could use a PWM dimmer for the manuel input control on the Skyview and Garmin. 

Well that did not work. Like I was thinking. however pror to digging in and rewiring the dimmer I noticed that when in the automatic dimming mode there was a feedback output on the dimming circuit that controled the backlit rockers.  ;D  so I set the Garmin and the Skyview to control dimming automaticly and let the bleed voltage control the backlit rockers.

So now everything is automatic. When the Skyview dims the rocker switches dim.

If I go in the skyview and manuelly dim the skyview screen it manuely dims the rockers 

The Garmin dims its self.

I could probably sort it out but no need to   If you want to wire one up like this dont ask me how cause I dont know.  :-? :-?

Of course, if you do it right, it will all be Dynon stuff

Put a com radio (nav/com, dare I hope?) on sale and I'll be able to do just that. Dimming will then be a non-issue, as my panel will consist of a SV and some switches.
