Nice talking with you guys at Oshkosh.

To follow up on the discussion, perhaps there is a path to have the Dynon SkyView, using the GPS-2020, meet TSO certification for enroute IFR. Considering you all are already using the same navigation database as Garmin and others for enroute, from my simplistic view the only barrier to enroute IFR is a heavy paperwork lift. As the SkyView would not be certified for approach, I assume this would simplify the certification process.

The objective being a SkyView with IFR enroute GPS and a VOR/LOC/ILS receiver could meet the needs of many who want IFR but without all the Garmin baggage.

Carl, I have been watching this post of yours in hopes that some knowledgeable member, or staff, would add some insight. I'm Skyview, and mode S, with ADS-B. I'm also planning on the GPS-2020, and also wondering about enroute IFR. Sure looks feasible, a lot more simple, and less expensive than a 430. Wow!! That would surely take Dynon to the next level. It doesn't hurt to dream..........Tom

Tom - I was surprised by the lack of comment/interest. Perhaps everyone is resigned to the $$$ Garmin box.

Garmin & the other expensive IFR GPS boxes.

Dynon has stated many times that jumping through the FAA required hoops to certify SkyView, even if just for enroute IFR operation, is way too costly. Probably the reason no experimental avionics company have done it.

But I guess we can dream.

This would be wonderful if it could happen. The ability to file /G with something less than a $10k box would be great. Wonder if Part 23 rewrite will help make this a reality.

Hi Carl, I followed up with the subject on Van's RV-12 forum, and Dynon did respond; basically saying that legal enroute with the GPS2020 alone, just ain't going to happen. He did offer the following link, and it does explain very clearly why it can't. Hope this helps... Tom

Tom,

I agree that the step to make the SkyView IFR approach certified is too heavy a lift. Considering the documentation Dynon went through to get the GPS-2020 approved for ADSB out, and that IFR enroute database is already in the SkyView, what are the barriers (besides paperwork and dragging the FAA along) to the SkyView being certified for enroute only IFR?

The simple answer, according to Dynon is that the screen, and the data base would have to be certified. Be careful what you ask for. Take a look at the price of certified screens, and you will understand my point. I'm happy with what I have. It was nice to dream, but the rare occasion that I would need enroute, just wouldn't justify the extra cost.........Tom
