Hello all, I have an SV-XPNDR-262 Class 2 transponder installed with my Dynon classic skyview in my 2015 Zenith CH750 registered in Canada. I'm pretty sure it is capable of ADSB-out. I would like to fly into the U.S. this summer and wondered if this would be OK?

The aviation agencies have really screwed-up ADS-B.

You have a transponder, but not the “right” transponder. You can have ADS-B, but not the “right” ADS-B. You can have the “right” ADS-B, but not the proper diversity set-up.

Oh, and all of this changes based on where you fly.

Don’t even get me started on ADS-B in…

Yeah, you need the 26, as it has a higher power output and you would also need an approved GPS signal. Such as the Dynon SV-2020
(or equivalent ) vs the SV-250.

You do not need ADSB to fly in the US if you stay out of class C and Class B/shelf.
Yes, I have it and wish all did.

The above post is not correct. This is where ADS-B OUT is required in the US:
  • Class A, B, and C airspace;
  • Class E airspace at or above 10,000 feet msl, excluding airspace at and below 2,500 feet agl;
  • Within 30 nautical miles of a Class B primary airport (the Mode C veil);
  • Above the ceiling and within the lateral boundaries of Class B or Class C airspace up to 10,000 feet;
  • Class E airspace over the Gulf of Mexico, at and above 3,000 feet msl, within 12 nm of the U.S. coast.
And graphically:

Really? The guy is flying a Zenith 750. The necessary bases were covered. Thank you

C'mon Ned. We're not in a vacuum here. Other people with different planes come here for information, and many won't realize your comment was only tailored to one aircraft. Please don't be sensitive or offended because someone offered a more comprehensive answer. In the immortal words of the prophet Rodney King, why can't we all just get along?

Yes, that was a joke.

Actually, they weren't, even for a Zenith 750. How about above Class C, or within the 30 NM Mode C veil? Those were missed.

Trig, who makes the Dynon transponder was doing upgrades from the 262 to a 261 for just over $1000 USD. Last year I sold one I acquired to someone who did the upgrade. They said they were running short of the upgrades, so give them a call and see if they can do yours.

Add the GPS- 2020 puck and you are good to go.

FYI, I asked if they were going to do a diversity upgrade to the 261 in the future, and said there were no plans at that time.
