My dynon skyview developed a new problem today. At startup it indicated system event 20 and system event 21 and kept rebooting several times until finally booting up and staying on. I shut it down and restarted it a bunch of times to test it and see if the code would clear. One time it rebooted 10 times before staying on. A couple of times it started up normally on the first try. But most of the startups rebooted 2-4 times before it would stay on. It seems to work normally once it stays on. except for the first time where it showed two codes, the startups where it rebooted, it would show either SYSTEM EVENT 20 or SYSTEM EVENT 21. I cannot find any information about either of these codes.

My wingman just installed a new Dynon Skyview HDX panel. I was in the plane with him last weekend and we experienced the same event during runup. It rebooted twice, then it was okay. We also experienced a system event 3 when trying to export some waypoints. We believe we can reproduce the system event 3 problem. Bug report has been filed with Dynon, waiting for a response. We could find no information on system event error codes.

Given that there are at least 21 system event error codes, it would be helpful to have a description for each error code.

System Event 3 simply means there was an error that caused the system to reboot. In the past, this has sometimes been caused by USB devices, such as memory sticks or wifi modules, and often follows a database or software update. I'm not familiar with 20 or 21. Dynon presumably doesn’t publish system event codes for the same reason we didn't with some of our systems in the Air Force, because their exact meaning can vary depending on when and where they occur during an operation. Users had a tendency to interpret them the wrong way, so we didn't advertise them. Same thing applied in IT after I retired from the Air Force. Ask 100 different IT engineers what causes an I/O error, and you'll get 100 different responses.

I get it, but I don't like it, particularly when your new PFD reboots in flight.

Some system event codes are well defined. I.E. "System Event 5 indicates that the SkyView display's internal Solid State Disk (SSD) is experiencing an abnormal number of errors, and thus should be replaced."

As the owner, installer and operator of a Dynon Skyview system, I would like to see some tech info that is more useful than "take two dumps and call us in the morning".

As an old avionics technician, I'd like to see more too. But also as an old avionics technician, I can understand the rationale behind not letting it out. I've seen a lot of end users prove the old adage, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing," and make their predicament far worse (and often more expensive). Obviously there's pros and cons, and one size definitely doesn't fit all. But I can also see why they might err on the side of caution. It is what it is. I wonder though, if anyone has even directly asked them for an system event code list. Might be worth a shot.
