Transferring a route from external device to SV?

Note: I haven't yet bought the Skyview display (just all the behind-the-panel black boxes) and have only glanced at the SV operating manual).

Is there a way of creating a route in an external application, say, WingX or Foreflight, and transferring the route into SV? This would really be nice from an iOS device but that would require a WiFi or Bluetooth connection; does Dynon plan to provide this in the future?

The motivation is that it's nice to create a route on your preferred device at home, then not have to duplicate all the work on the SV in an unheated/conditioned hangar while draining the aircraft battery.

I use iflightplanner to create the route, save as .GPX; move it to a USB and import the flight plan into the SV.
Dont use foreflight nor wing x to tell you if they allow this. The user manual pg 7-50 will give more details.

If you have a program that can generate a .gpx file, save it to a USB memory stick and SkyView can import it. There's a list of programs that are known to work here.

The big one that used to work and then didn't once it became FlyQ was the AOPA online flight planner. They've just announced that they're bringing back the "old" Jeppessen-powered version, so hopefully that will regain .gpx flight plan exports soon.

All that said, we're definitely looking into enhanced capability in this area...

I still wish I could save 1-2 flightplans right on the display. I use the same procedure everytime I land and always need to go through the steps to assure I have the USB plugged in. I would prefer to have a third tab that has the saved flightplans, imported and created right on display.

I bought a low profile USB stick and leave it plugged into the SV all the time. Think of it as extra memory. Just like the SD card in your cell phone. There would probably be no difference loading the flight plan from SV memory or the USB stick. Plus you're always prepared to get that screen shot. ;)

If you leave a thumb drive in one of the USB ports in the back of the Skyview with routes on it, can you still use the USB port on the harness to update charts etc or can it only have one USB in any of the ports at a time?

Pg 7-9 of user manual:
Note that SkyView only allows one USB memory stick to be connected to a display at a time. Any other USB memory stick – such as the one that you normally use for SkyView software and database updates – must be disconnected from your SkyView system

So can one leave a USB on a secondary display and use the primary display to load updates? for example can I load a FPL on primary display, and than export to secondary display USB to keep it? how would Skyview know which USB to use in that case? Assuming I have 1 USB in each display

I've got about a dozen flight plans the I use repeatedly on both thumb drives that are used for the chart subscription. that way they are always available. Their presence does not interfere with loading or use of the Oregon Aero charts. I also load the Dynon updates on the same thumb drives, again there is no interference.

dlloyd- I assume you are removing and putting in the USB drives each time. I want an external USB I do not remove, but rather store data on and have one I update that is removed each time, like for data logging.
Think of it as two drives c-not removable d- removable

Reidvaitor, don't know if you can create a flight plan on one display and save it to a thumb drive in another display.  I am pretty sure the flight plan can only be loaded from a display with the thumb drive inserted.  Similarly, the Seattle Avionics charts will only show on a display with the thumb drive inserted (won't share over the net).
Yep, about once a month both drives go home with me and get the new Seattle and Dynon data updates.  Sorry, have not used the data logging feature.

Might I suggest SkyVector as a Dynon possible associate, like you did with Seattle Avionics.

I've used all the planning software out there and find it to be outstanding - I use it multiple times a day for everything imaginable - from planning flights, to checking weather,TFR's and gas prices.  Even daily events - like the MAS 777 disappearance and shootdown.

It's extraordinarily fast, comprehensive, intuitive and user friendly.  Lockheed Martin uses them as one of their service providers, and I use L-M to file my Flight Plans.

The only thing missing is an export via .gpx.

Dave, SkyVector's creator, is a great guy.  I've spoken with him at length at the last two Puyallup Aviation Shows.  He's told me adding an Export function to his Flight Plan section would be "easy", and promised to move it to a high position on his To-Do List.  Despite a lot of arm twisting  (by me), it hasn't happened.  I poked him a couple of times on the SkyVector Forum to jog his memory, but without success.

Well, as with my wife, you can only do what you can do.

I think he would be an ideal partner for Dynon, and you could work with him to add the Flight Plan Export function.  Then I would be a happy man......

I'm a fan of SkyVector myself when I'm sketching out flights, doing a quick wx check, etc, and I'd love to be able to pop out a GPX file myself! :)

We've spoken with Dave at shows as well and he's related the same desire to implement .gpx files as well. We'll ping him and see whether it's nearing the top of his list.

I am a huge fan/user of both SkyVector and Dynon so PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE make this happen so I can do the "Happy Dance"!

Just got done using AOPA's beta of their "new" online flight planner. I put new in quotes because it looks just like the old Jepp version - and most importantly the .gpx export is there :) :) :)

So it sounds like a .gpx format is sort of a universal protocol for routes? If so, then all that's needed for everybody to use their favorite routing program is
[olist][*]Your preferred routing software needs to output in .gpx;
[*]Dynon needs to provide a bluetooth or wifi gizmo to read/write USB-challenged devices.
[/olist]

What say Dynon?

Oh good! I missed the sign-up window for their beta call: glad to hear it'll be in there!

Getting the GPX into Skyview is also my problem when traveling. At home I can prepare an USB on the PC but on tour  I use Ipad to make the trip. It produces a GPX but Apple cannot handle sticks.
One of these small USB Bluetooth or WiFi sticks in a Skyview port would be an ideal and cheap solution.
It just requires a not too complicated driver in Skyview.
I have proposed earlier but Dynon was not too keen on it.
Wireless is the future !
Routing on Skyview is too complicated. I received my touch units and hopefully this will improve, but there seems to be no rubber banding.

Hi Richard - I received an email about being selected as a beta tester for their new online software - FlyQ web is going away.  When I started using AOPA online planning (2005) it was a Jeppesen product.  The current beta looks identical to the version before they replaced it with Fly Q.

The Fly Q transition was horrid - old stored data missing, bugs, features missing (.gpx export). I sent several emails asking about the problems, if .gpx was going to be added, etc.  eventually, AOPA just stopped responding to my emails.  I was extremely close to terminating my membership because of this.  I consider the flight planner part of my subscription cost (which just went up) and the roll out to Fly Q was horrible IMO.

Again the Fly Q replacement looks just like the previous version thus far.  Not sure how long until it is released to everyone.
