I retrofitting my Q-200 and am getting rid of all my steam gauges and am on the verge of ordering a FlightDek180. Is the Bendix/King KT-76A transponder capable of working with the 180, and allowing me to get rid of the external encoder?

Thanks.

Yes, but you need to buy the converter that we sell. The D180 outputs a serial stream, which works directly with Garmin 327 and 330 transponders. The KT-76A uses grey code, so we sell a serial-grey code converter for $80. With this, you can use the EFIS as your altitude encoder.

Do you mean that with a Dynon D100 and a Garmin GTX 328 (in Europe), yo don't need an alticoder?

With the 327, 328, or 330, you can hook a single wire from the EFIS to the transponder and you don't need an altitude encoder.

With other transponders you can use an $80 converter we sell instead of an altitude encoder if you wish.

yes, provided that your inspector (if you have an experimental aircraft that needs to be signed off by an inspector) likes the idea of feeding the transponder with information coming from a non-certified EFIS.

Now, the fact that the serial stream from the Dynon is much much more precise than any blind encoder you can hook up to a tranponder is a different story... :-[

If your plane is totally unlicensed (like my microlight here in Italy) then there should be no problem, and you can use your 328 with 25 feet vertical resolution without problems. :)

That's not entirely fair as there are hi-resolution (10ft) blind encoders available (Skandia and Shadin)... But at prices that exceed the cost of a D10A

and the ACK A-30.9 (was 30.8) which gives serial & gray code - 100 or 10ft resolution. ;)
