Updating

What exactly is involved in updating Dynon products to new firmware? I have been told that I will need to remove the unit to make an update including disconnecting pitot/static lines. If true, this could be a real pain. Is there a way to put a serial port in the panel and just connect to that?

I want a Dynon setup in my panel, but I don't want to remove them for every update. What's the real deal on this?

When you install it, you just wire a DB9 serial connector (which comes with the pre-wired harnesses from most places). Anytime you want to update it, you plug a laptop into the connector and update it. Simple. You *do not need* to remove the unit!

Lance is right. You can update it right in the panel, no removal needed. This has been true since we shipped the very first EFIS-D10 back in 2003. We're sorry you had heard otherwise.

Same topic, I just received my D-100 and D-120 to install in my RV project and I will have both a SL30 and a 496. The documentation suggests hooking the 496 to the EMS and SL30  to the EFIS, and according to the documentation I will have to disconnect the SL30 to perform the EFIS upgrades, how is this normaly accomplished from a wiring perpective?? I have the prebuilt harness with the DB9 connector.

The easiest way to achieve this is by wiring the SL-30 to a DB9 connector that plugs into the same connector as the one you do PC updates with. You fly with the SL-30 connector plugged in, and when you need to do an update, you unplug that and plug in the PC.

You could also splice into the wire that goes to the pre-installed DB9 connector and put a switch in there. The switch would be "on" for normal flight and "off" for updates.
