I tried to upload the latest skyview software to my RV-12 today, but no joy.  I downloaded version 15.0.4 from Vans per their instructions.  I brought the usb drive back home from the hangar, and noticed it was in locked mode.  Will this prevent the upload of the data from the flashdrive into skyview ?.

thx

Tom,
What part of the process failed? Did you get an error message?
What is "locked mode" for a USB drive?

no error.  the top line of the setup menu "software system setup" was greyed out.  wouldn't bring up a submenu.

the usb drive has a little switch on it, "write protected" I think, and it was in the locked position.  see below.

So if it's in locked mode, you can't write to the drive. That part happens when you move the file from your computer to the stick, so if it's on there, it's not locked. If it's just a slider switch on the stick, just unlock it. If the system software menu remains grayed out after a few seconds after a USB stick is plugged in, that means that either the stick isn't being seen, or that it's blank. So if it was locked when you tried to put your files onto it, they might not actually be on the stick. So check that first. If your USB cable had an issue (I forget how that's broken out on the RV-12), that would of course make it look like it's not there as well.

I unlocked the little slide switch on my USB stick and it worked!.
But, as this is my first time updating, I used the update from Vans Aircraft.  After looking on this site, it would appear I am missing the terrain, obstacle, & aviation databases, as they don't show up on Vans download.  Do I need to update those items from this site to be complete ?.

Thx

If you're in the U.S., the best bet is to use the single "quick update package" from http://www.dynonavionics.com/skyview-software-updates.php

That is a single file that will update software, firmware and all the databases. The unit is smart enough to not re-update anything unnecessary.

Henry;
Thanks for responding.  Does the "quick update package" overwrite any of Van's stuff ?.

Thanks again

It doesn't, but it's probably best to following their RV-12 specific instructions and packages for software updates, which are at https://www.vansaircraft.com/public/downloads.htm.

Other than the software updates, you're really only updating the aviation/obstacles database routinely, which is here: http://www.dynonavionics.com/us-aviation-obstacle-data.php.

So, a novice could use a little guidance here please.
each time I turn on the skyview, I get the message
"Expired database aviation, 06-jan-2016".
I push the "accept" button and all is good till I boot up again.
I believe all I have to do is upload the latest software from dynon
File name is:  faa_av1707_ob1704_15.2.0.duc

using the following procedure:
1. Download new files to your PC.
2. Transfer the files to a USB stick. Files must be in the "root" of the USB stick. In other words, they can not be in a folder or directory.
3. Power up your SkyView.
4. Insert the USB stick into a SkyView USB port.
5. Use the SkyView Setup Menu to load the new files.
6. Reboot SkyView.

from all the experts out there, am I missing anything ?.

Tom,

No expert here, that looks pretty good, but at the end, if you are using version 15.0 or higher, a reboot of Skyview is not necessary. Additionally, if you have dual Skyview displays, you only need to load the new database to a single display. At reboot, the two displays will synchronize (you should see a message advising that when it happens).
After that, you are good to go!

The synchronization is true, if, you have both screens connected together with an ethernet cable.

You've got it. As mentioned by others, you'll repeat on other display if they're not connected via ethernet. If they are, you'll see a database synchronizing message on the displays as they transfer from the first one to the other.
