USB Extension Panel Mount, Doesn't work?

I used the following L-Com product to extend the USB port on the back of the Dynon display to the panel, in hopes on making it more convenient to do updates, etc. However, to my disappointment it does not seem to work, could someone please explain (to a non-techie) why this does not communicate with the Dynon, and possible solutions?

Not sure why that wouldn't work. Plenty of people have used the USB 2.0 versions of that without issue.

The only thing I can think of is that what you show is the USB 3.0 version and SkyView is USB 2.0. It's supposed to be backwards compatible, but maybe the L-COM only works with USB 3.0?

Do you have it plugged into the back of the EFIS, or into the cable on the harness? Have you plugged in the same device you are trying to plug into the panel right into the back of the EFIS to make sure it isn't the USB device that isn't working?
 
It is plugged into the back of the display, I was using/intending to use it for the Dynon Thumb drive for updates. Ill pursue it with L-Com and see what they say

Is there a preferred method, directly into the back of the display or into the supplied USB cable that is connected to the harness? I am trying to figure out how to go about doing the updates. I assume most people connect another panel mounted cable to the supplied harness cable...? I would rather not take a chance on screwing my my panel by cutting another hole in it but if I need to, I will. I'm also curious as to why the harness cable is not supplied as a panel mount type. This would eliminate one connection. Am I missing something? Thanks
 
We built two USB connectors onto the back of the SkyView display on the assumption that there would be USB devices that would be permanently connected, and now there are:
* Wi-Fi adapter
* Video input adapter

The built-in USB cable isn't a panel mount because we didn't want to assume that every customer would WANT to install a panel mount USB connector; and if you didn't, the loose panel mount connector would be more "sharp edges" to catch on things when tucked up under the panel.

If you don't have both a Wi-Fi adapter and a Video input adapter connected to your SkyView display, the preferred method for a panel mount USB is to plug it into a one of the (unused) USB connectors on the back of the SkyView display.

From a practical standpoint, this makes the (otherwise INaccessible USB connector accessible, and minimizes the USB cable length.

That sounds good. I will attach one directly into the back of my D1000 then. If I want to eliminate the supplied USB cable, I assume I can clip the individual wires and heat shrink the ends? Thanks for the help.
 
Just as a follow up. the original L-Com USB extensions that I bought never worked. They were sold as USB 3.0, but I am slightly suspicious that they may have been an old stock product (1.0?) In either case, the LCom 2.0 extensions in the link above, did indeed work correctly.
