My take on what the problem is here is that it's not the fact that there has been a change, it's that the change is nonsensical. Whoever saw an oval compass? It's only when you realise that its oval to provide room for the horizontal EMS band that it makes sense. Without it it just looks like a mistake as it serves no purpose. As I've said previously, if it can be argued that the increased width of the HSI is of benefit, then given there's no EMS band you can keep the increased width but make it round as there's plenty of vertical space.

So that's really the issue in a nutshell...the interface was modified not by any understanding of a better implementation or presentation, or for new functionality, but because of some constraints of screen real estate.  That's the tail wagging the dog...the layout is driving the design of the individual interface element, rather than having the function drive it.

To make it worse, then there's the attempt to "back in" to a rationale..."hey, it's BETTER because, well...give me a second to come up with a reason..."

Just figure out how to make it a circle, like everybody else in the world who has spent any time studying and implementing user interfaces.

Sometimes standards exist for a reason...

So an update from us.

First, thank you all for your feedback on this. You're a passionate bunch, and you help us make our products as good as they can be.

We're planning on changing the HSI back to a full circle in the next "point release" that will have this and a couple of minor 15.0 bug fixes. Should be available in the coming weeks (soon). The only place it will remain slightly ovalized is on the HDX display when the bottom engine band is on, where it helps keep the HSI out of the way of the synthetic vision / attitude display when there is less vertical space available.

Editorial note: We almost never remove or edit posts, but there are a few in this thread that have been removed for tone.

Thank you! Both for fixing the problem, but more importantly for letting us know it's on your radar. That type of communication is exactly what sets Dynon apart from the rest.

Thank you Dynon support for your efforts. It seems I was the only one wanting the oval HSI for its intended purpose, to make way for the improved HDX display layout. Obviously no one else is interested which is a pity as it works perfectly on SV Touch and given that some wanted better features rather than time spent reverting to the circular HSI I thought they may have added their support. I ran through all the Icon controls today and was not surprised that they work seamlessly.

I flew for the first time yesterday with V15. I add my vote for returning to round.

Thank you, Dynon, for your fantastic product and customer support.

Aside from restoring the round HSI, I'd like to see new "features" not turned on as defaults. New features should be highlighted as being available in the announcement, but you should be able to upgrade your software and see NO changes to the user experience without turning the new features on intentionally and after understanding them.

AGREE!!! FWIW if the main thing people are complaining about is one of "display personal preference" then you guys are doing EXCELLENT work. Keep it up.

This is a tricky balance. We've been down the path of "make EVERYTHING an option", and where it leads is to more complexity in support, education, and customer understanding. This is one reason that the "full" HDX experience isn't coming to SkyView Touch. It has some very different user interface paradigms. We can't switch the whole fleet over wholesale - you this thread is evidence of why not. It's also hard to support - from a testing, customer support, and future development perspective - an option that transforms the entire UX of a product in such a fundamental way.
