Hi Guys,

Is there anywhere showing how to select and fly VOR radials in the manual - I can't find anything!

I get that you have to (at the moment anyway) select your VOR using the SL30 but how do you control which radial and how does one intercept the localizer and fly a Glideslope using the autopilot?

First study pages 4-17 & 18 in the users guide. There are 2 pointers on your HSI named BRG 1 and BRG 2. Push the button for either on the PFD page and select none, GPS 0, Nav 1, Standby 1 (I think), and maybe something else. If your SL30 was set up as Nav 1, select that and it will display a pointer for the VOR if you have a signal. If you select Standby, and monitor the SL30 standby frequency, it will display a pointer for that VOR if you have a signal. These pointers show only what radial you are on, almost like an ADF. Pushing the NAVSRC button, again you can select GPS, Nav 1, Standby, etc. If you select Nav 1 and it for your SL30 and have a signa,l a CDI needle will show on the HSI. Select the radial using the OBS function on the SL30 or use the joystick CRS function. If you have a localizer frequency on the SL30 the OBS funtion is disabled, you must set the inbound course using the joystick funtion or with the SL30 OBS function prior to changing to a localizer frequency. Do it a few times, it is easier to do than describe. The autopilot will intercept and track the localizer but not the glideslope (later perhaps?).

ooh, i didnt realize you could map the standby frequency on the SL30 as well. i will give that a go on the next flight!

i have found changing the mode of the dynon selector knob from heading bug to OBS selector then back to heading bug (which i prefer as the default mode) cumbersome.

in some ways, it is easier to hit the SL-30 OBS button, rotate the knob, and switch back to com.

Yes, it is really neat to be able to have nav info for two frequencies from one SL30 both shown on the HSI. I also think it is easier to use the OBS button and rotate the SL30 knob to select the radial. In fact, I try to keep one selector knob set for barometric setting, one for altitude, one map range and one heading all the time.
