Using a Garmin GTN650 to tune a VOR, and Dynon Skyview, I need guidance on the best way to prepare to intercept a radial, and then fly outbound. At SMO I hear IFR clearances say "fly runway heading, at the LAX 315 radial turn right". I am preparing to take IFR training and have been practicing things on my own prior to hiring an instructor. I need to know how to make the equipment work well for VOR requests in various scenarios. Thank you.

While we're not GTN instructors, tracking a VOR with SkyView is pretty straightforward. First, you'll want to make sure that you've got your SkyView's HSI set to the GTN's NAV radio. How that is named on the info widget right next to the HSI will depend on how you have your devices named in SkyView. But regardless, your HSI course needle and the info widget will be GREEN when it's set to a NAV radio source. Next, it's simply a matter of tuning the frequency on the GTN and then using SkyView's CRS joystick knob selection to choose your course/radial. Since SkyView provides an HSI, you'll notice that the course and CDI turn to help you orient yourself.

Beyond that, there are some things specific to the GTN that you'll want to make sure you fully understand, particularly when transitioning from GPS en-route navigation to an ILS or other radio-based navigation. For example, depending on how you have SkyView set up, you can have SkyView automatically transition its HSI from the GPS "side" of the GTN to the radio side automatically as the GTN sequences. Alternatively, SkyView can be configured so that you can manually toggle SkyView's HSI between the GPS and Nav radio via SkyView, but then you give up the auto-switching capability that the GTN is capable of. Now the nice thing here is you' don't need the rating at all to practice this on your own while VFR, or even on the ground if you can receive a VOR at your airport.

What Skyview settings are required to have the transition to/from GPS and VOR/ILS? My GNS 480 is set to make the change automatically. I have GPS output to one pointer and VOR/ILS on another. The HSI source normally tracks the GPS portion which should automatically switch to VOR/ILS (in the 480) when capturing an ILS and then back to GPS during a missed approach.

SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > ARINC-429 > ALLOW AUTO SWITCH: set to YES.

Setting ALLOW AUTO SWITCH: to YES (LABEL 100P) (which is the default, including after upgrading firmware to v10.0 or later) allows the 430/530/530 to tell SkyView to switch from GPS to ILS or back when on an ILS overlay approach - SkyView will display whatever mode the 430/530/650 tells SkyView to be in. When in this mode and not on an approach, switching between the NAV function and GPS function must be performed from the 430/530/650.

If you want to manually select GPS and NAV from the 430/530/650, as you have done prior to v10.0, SETUP MENU > SYSTEM SETUP > ARINC-429 > ALLOW AUTO SWITCH: NO

(From the SkyView System Installation Guide)

But as a note, this has not been tested with the 480. This requires a specific ARINC message to be sent out, which may or may not occur on the 480.

Thanks for the information. Looks like it would have been defaulted to ON when I upgraded to Ver 10. Now on current (13.03 I think) but I will check the setting. I will fly the aircraft and report back on the GNS 480 switching in case you get others with questions.

Should have a report soon. Wet weather and grass runway did not mix. Checked the auto switching setting and it is set to YES. Will report here Ryanallen, hopefully this week. Sorry for the delay.

I flew an approach today, with the GTN650 set for vectors to final of an ILS procedure. I flew manually towards the inbound course, below the glide slope. I had the GTN selected as the source for the HSI, and the source for the flight plan on the map. I saw the HSI switch automatically to the ILS using the GTN receiver. I saw the HSI go from purple to green. I armed the autopilot and immediately captured the course. I flew until intersecting the glide slope with VNAV armed and locked onto the glide slope. I then flew at 100 knots, using more or less throttle for fine adjustment on the glide slope. The airplane tracked perfectly down the slope until I switched off the autopilot at 500 feet looking right at the runway. I am not IFR rated, and I have not had any instruction yet. The Dynon autopilot with GTN guidance allows a beginner to fly a very nice approach in my experience.
