What is HSI track reading?

Using my Garmin 430W with your EFIS D-100 and HS 34, in GPS mode the course reading is correct but the track is way off--the magenta arrow stays in the SE quadrant of the HSI rose and reads a bearing that has no bearing ( pun intended) to anything my plane is doing ?
(Also, in a complete power failure, is the D-100 out of service since it is connected to the HS 34 ? Not a good thing, since I'll now need a bsackup AI for IFR flight)
Thanks
Frank

So first, make sure all of your settings in your EFIS HSI setup and your 430 setup look like this:

http://wiki.dynonavionics.com/Garmin_430/530_Wiring

Remember that the course deviation, bearing, and all other indications should be directly related to your currently active waypoint programed into your GPS. To that end, if you program in a new direct-to while in-flight, does the CDI then center and point in the same correct direction as the bearing pointer?

One way that will help us see what you're seeing would be to send a picture (to support@dynonavionics.com) of your 430 showing your airplane on course while the HSI is mis-behaving.

The CDI and course bearing operate correctly. It's only "Track" that reads incorrectly. I'll take a pic in flight and will send it later this week, as I'm flying south from NH and won't have access to computer for a few days.
How about the power outage question ?
Thanks

On a related question:

Will the Dynon with the HS34's course knob rotate the GPS courseline when the 430 is in OBS mode? Does the HSI course also update?

I haven't tried the OBS mode. When in VLOC, the course line auto resets to localizer bearing. I'll go thru these scenarios over next 2 days and get back with more info.
Thanks

Do you know if you have the latest software on your HS34? We had an update for it a few months ago that fixed some problems. If it's new from us it's probably fine.

Your D100 will run fine if the HS34 powers off, you just won't have the HSI functions. The D100 will annunciate a loss of the HS34 if that happens.

Brantel,
The GPS course line will rotate in the 430 with the HS34.

OK I have a picture but neither my wife ( Master's in computer science and 15 years experience, nor I, can figure out how to attach it to this reply--the "insert image" button doesn't allow us to link it--so what's the secret ?
Thanks

You have to upload your pic to someplace to "host" the file and then you can insert the link to ut using the insert image button.

This button will not pull it off your local computer.  The file must reside somewhere accessable to users of the web.

do a google search for "free image hosting" and go from there.

Like this image below: Right click on it and see the way the image is linked to a free web hosting site.

Here is the panel picture

My track is about the same as my course--but the "track" reading and the magenta arrow are indicating in the 50's.
Thanks

So there was a small bug in the initial version of HS34 firmware that causes some of the GPS data to display oddly in certain locations. See http://www.dynonavionics.com/docs/RevLog_HS34.html for details. If you hook up your computer and do a "detect firmware version" while hooked up to the HS34's serial port, you can determine whether or not you need to update it.

I have the latest version of the software, as the whole system was installed about 1 month ago. If you'll look closely at the picture, not only is the "track" reading incorrectly, but the wind speed is registering 99 mph ?
So, talk with your colleagues and see if something than version of software is at work.
Thanks

Wind is based on track, so that's an expected reading if the track is off.

What really matters is when the HS34 was purchased, not installed. Do you know when it was purchased from Dynon? If it was from a dealer, it could have been on their shelf for a few months.

Hi,
The HS 34 was purchased by Infinity Avionics in Nashua NH sometime shortly after March 10th. The installation took place over the 3/10 thru 4/20 time period.
Thanks

Give us a call at 425-402-0433 so we can give you a few things to check out. If you can get the serial number off the side of your HS34, that would help us backtrack it.

The HS34 Serial # is 1334.
I flew the plane over 30 hrs--the first 10 or so, the problem with the tracking was as described above--then, out of the blue--it worked ! For about the next 8 hrs--then outta the blue it reversed itself to the same original prioblem--and is still that way.
I'll call the number you gave tyo me on Tues to give you a day to noodle this development.
Also, wharer's my VSI-we just installed the HS34, Garmin 430 etc and the lastest firmware--and my VSI is gone. I'd prefer to have my VSI tape and give up my speed or altitude tape, since they are both readouts.
Thanks

Where did you go over those 8 hours? The bug we know of involves the local magnetic variation. If you were on west deviation when it was broken and on east when it worked, then a firmware update will fix you for sure.

I hope, but doubt, that it's that simple. We flew from NH to around Memphis before it switched in mid flight to the correct track. We continued our southerly flight to Natchez, the to HOU and then to central and southern Louisiana-the unit worked fine. We then left LA. and headed for Tullahoma TN and then Charleston WV. It switched back to the incorrect mode during this phase of flight--probably before Tullahoma, but I'm not sure--and continues to be incorrect all the way to NH.
Hope this helps

Your flight legs seem to confirm what we're thinking. You would've crossed the zero mag var line in the leg you described. I still think a firmware update will solve it.
