What's involved in adding a second Skyview?

I have one Skyview in my Van's RV-12. What is involved in adding another one on the co-pilot side? This will be done by an avionics shop, not be me.

Thanks

With the RV12s I have been involved with using the standard supplied wiring loom the wiring is all in place for a second screen. I suspect all you will have to do is buy or make the instrument panel section with the appropriate cutout and then plug the new screen in. i don’t recall seeing the network cable that runs between the two screens but that is a simple plug in of the cable.

Well besides the physical installation, you will need ground, power and circuit protection. Most of the data that comes into it comes in on the can bus, the 9 pin network connectors. Each device has 2 ports so they can be daisy chained together. However there are a few things that have to be wired in to 232 ports. The GPS receiver and transponder for sure. Vertical Power if you have it communicates with a 232 port as well as your ADSB.

My advice is have a look behind the panel and see if there are connectors there for a second screen before getting too involved in what is required.
oh yes i should have specified Ethernet cable in my previous post when I said network cable.

Then what would call the network cable that carries the vast majority of the data from one device to another?
I'd call it the same thing that Dynon calls it - a Skyview Network Cable. It is an unpublished proprietary network protocol. Canbus is a very specific thing, and the Dynon network isn't that.

Well I have had people that know a lot more about electronics than I do call it a canbus. Apparently they are mistaken. Anyway, the vast majority of communications between Dynon devices happen on that network. The Cat 5 cable does almost nothing. It only allows you to do database updates to all screens from one USB terminal.

The Dynon screen you have has 2, 9pin network connections on it. If you run out of network connections, you just put in a 5 port hub. I have 2 of them in my RV10 because I have just about everything Dynon sells in it. I have one open port left. Some components like the ADAHARS only have one port so you will need at least one 5 port hub. More complex installations that include a 3 axis autopilot will require two 5 port hubs to connect everything.

Vans supplies a standard loom for the RV12 which has all wiring and connectors for two screens. There is no need for hubs or anything else. If it’s the standard loom you just plug the screens in.
lets not go down the track of overcomplicating everything until the OP has a look to see what he has available.

I've worked electronics, avionics and computers for over 40 years, and I have a degree in it. Although the Skyview network performs similar, and some identical, functions, it's not a CANBUS. The network hub is exactly that, a network hub. A CANBUS controls and communicates. A network has no controller. It simply communicates. Of course, you can call it a ferflunkle if you want, but it isn't a CANBUS. It's far more similar to a computer serial network.

Why is that some people insist on pushing that they are right when they are plainly wrong 🙄. Data communications come in various forms, it’s better that we use the correct terms where possible to assist in troubleshooting - just say you didn‘t know, it’s not hard, & move on. Smile.

To be fair to rjones, he did say the people who'd told him that were apparently mistaken. He wasn't denying that. Now we move on and smile I guess. Except maybe for me. Just got told I'm going into the hospital tonight for my eighth surgery of the year. I figure, if you're gonna go, you might as well go big. But I don't have to smile if I don't want to. I'll try to keep in touch here though. Not like I'll have anything else to do. Sorry. My personal problems are not your concern. Just wanted to vent a little.

Hey Rhino, we‘ll ’see’ you here in a few days? IMO venting your problem, obviously serious, may help ease your stress if only for a short time.
IF you don’t return then you will surely be missed. Your obvious wealth of knowledge has helped many others & I figure it’s something you enjoy passing on. We wouldn’t be on here otherwise. Just remember the good times & we hope to ‘hear‘ from you soon🤞🙏.

Thanks. I plan to still be here, though not sure how often. Not much else to do in the hospital. Nothing immediately life threatening. They're just scared it could get that way, so they're erring on the side of caution (and misery for me), so they're admitting me tonight. I'm currently practicing my superior procrastination skills in actually getting there (wife just came in and reminded me).
