When do you need the external compass

I am in the final stages of wiring my panel. For the most part the Dynon agrees with my whiskey compass right out of the box. However, when I power up the taxi/landing/ and wig-wag lights, it does affect the compass reading.

I was hoping to avoid mounting the external compass if possible. Is temporary yet intermittant interference going to hurt the Dynon?  Thanks.

Hugh,
The magnetic field from the lighting will not damage or permanently alter the EFIS in any way. But as you note, your compass will be inacurate whenever your lighting is on. You may be able to re-route some of your wires and reduce this effect- it sounds like your lighting wires run close to the EFIS in the panel.

As another note- the EFIS is not calibrated at all at the factory for magnetic heading. If yours appears to be working, it is just chance and there is no guarentee that it will read correctly at all headings nor at all attitudes. You will need to calibrate the compass before you really know how well it will perform.
