Yet another Thermocouple wire question

To save space and weight I'd like to use a multipair thermocouple extension wire. Omega has an eight pair cable, that is shielded for type J and K. I would like to use 24 awg stranded instead of solid, because it lives longer in a high vibration environment than solid wire.

look OK?

thanks, Scott

It looks like that should work just fine. Our harnesses use stranded wire as well.

Ensure that the junction between our harness and the extension wire is kept as short as possible and does not have a temperature difference across it.

by junction, you are referring to the "connector"?

I was going to use AMP Molex connectors to connect the probe wire to the extension wire, the extension wire will run all the way to the D-Sub connector that plugs into the EMS unit.

Do I need to use special thermocouple connectors?

The Molex connectors will work. Basically any connectors will work, as the temperature difference across them will be minimal. People run into problems when they have connectors across a firewall, for example, where the temperature on one side of the connector is hotter than the other.

In situations like those (and when extending with non-thermocouple wire) the difference in temperature across the junction will show up as error in the final answer.

But, it sounds like you've got all your bases covered, so go ahead and go with your current plan.
