I would like to pre arm the AP in HDG and VS mode on the ground prior to departure. It will arm, but only for several seconds and then the settings will disappear. Without actually engaging the autopilot, is there a way to keep it armed prior to departure until in the air and able to engage the autopilot? Or is there a different sequence of events to capture the same intent?

In run-up area, I set heading and altitude bugs. When I begin my take-off roll, I hold the disconnect/release to engage button in. After lift off in a stabilized climb, I release the button. Plane turns to selected heading and climbs at set VS to preset altitude. I'm sure there are more ways to do this, and maybe I'm not doing it right, but for an IFR take-off this is my way so far.

You don't mention if you have the optional AP panel and using the Advanced Mode, which should allow you to do what you want. Set both and when airborn, enable the autopilot.
